I was able to get out for a half-day MTB trip with Las Vegas Cyclery (Escape Adventures). Great experience!!!!! On a crisp clean October morning their bike van picked up right on time at the Mirage for a 20 min trip to the Mustang Trails. This trail system has over 100 miles of interconnecting trails over terrain ranging from easy to nearly impossible. Rental bikes were Santa Cruz Hecklers except for one GT i-drive 2. All were in perfect mechanical condition. Chad (our guide) rechecked our bikes and briefed us on the trail, including the fact that it was open to horses (and horse droppings). We saw no horses, and only a few droppings. Chad did a great job of adding trail sections to match the ability of the 4 riders in our group (intermediate to semi-advanced). We had a much more challenging ride than the flat singletrack with minimal climbs advertised for this tour on their website. Chad took us on some sustained rocky climbs that got so steep all of us (except Chad, of course) had to carry our bikes in some sections. Being from the flatlands of the Midwest, my quads were burning on those long climbs. After the climbs, we were rewarded with downhills that were fast and fun. During the trip, the terrain included rocky, hardpack, sand, gravel, and some flat rock. There was enough technical stuff to keep it interesting, but not overwhelming for beginning to intermediate riders. Even though I've done a fair amount of desert hiking in Arizona, I still thought the scenery was awesome. Thanks Chad for a great ride!!! For any MTBer visiting Vegas, get off the strip and into the mountains. You won't regret it!!!!!!!
