View Full Version : 12 hour races
spinful 02-12-2004, 02:28 AM I have been trying to put together a 12/24 hour race schedule for this year. Besides Pando and Boyne here in MI and Greenman in MN, I wondered about the following two races. 12 of Palos and 12 of Dino. Anyone have info about these two races or others? I know about the wems series, but even with the high speed ferry out of Muskegon, Wisconsin is more like a long weekend for me. I am planning on doing that for Greenman, but for the most part I prefer to stay within a 6 hour drive of GR, MI.

Rumor has it that 12 hrs of Palos is dead
~martini~ 02-12-2004, 06:17 AM You sure about not wanting to go to Wisco too often? They've got a whole series of 12 hr races. This is the second year for the series. Its well run, and the courses, from what I hear are all quite good. If I'm in the area this summer, I'll be trying to do two or three of them if time allows. Yeah 12 hours of John Muir (aka Kettle Morraine) is not far from Chicago at all. I think it's like an hour NW or so.

Just trying to avoid taking time off from work. I will probably try one of the races on the wems series closer to Milwaukee. We can take the new high speed ferry across from Muskegon. The race in Indiana is much closer. Anyone race there before?

12 Hours of DINO at Warsaw (Winona Lake).
Best trail I've ridden in Northern Indiana. This will be the first 12 hour race they are having that I know of. If you want to check it out, they are having a 'normal' race on May 1st.
Trail reminds me of Ft Custer. The terrain is different but has a similar feel to it, kinda hard to explain. Maybe just the grin factor?
If one of the local teams can't get a 4th for the race, even I might be racing that one.
Anything particular you interested in?
Might check out this link (http://www.kcvelo.com/) for Kos County Velo. The website aint much, yet. But they are working on it and should have plenty of info up there before that race.
Good luck!

How long is the trail? Multi- loops like Custer? Curious if there is enough riding to consider just going as a destination.

Trail is growing, think it currently is around 8 miles, maybe a bit more.
There is really one main trail, but with cheater trails to make it shorter.
It is not nearly as long as some of the really good trails in Michigan, but I don't know of a longer trail in Indiana's northern 1/3rd.
It's about an hour and a half drive for me, but well worth the drive. For a six hour drive?? It is a very fun, and pretty fast trail. The nice thing is that it isn't the only trail in the area.
To get to Warsaw you will be pretty close to Moches Park in Columbia City (1/2 hour away) and an OK trail.
City of Goshen is also putting in a mountain bike trail. Should be about 5 miles, but not done yet. Also about 1/2 hour away, but a different direction.
And there is a pretty long trail in Ft Wayne. It needs maintained, but it is pretty fun to ride. It can be muddy, but can also be pretty technical in a few spots too.
A bit further south than Ft Wayne will also be Huntington Resivoir. I have not ridden there yet, so can't say for sure how long it will take to get there, or what riding it offers. Check out www.3rvs.com and they should have some more info on the FW and Huntington Resivoir areas.

Interestering mix of bands- Cracker one night, Willie Nelson one night, tickets are for sale, but I don't see how to sign up for the race.
Greenman Festival (http://www.greenmanfestival.com/)
May 29 - 12 Hr. Race
October 30 - 12/13 Hr. Race - 12 midnight to 12 noon and with the time change makes for a 13 hour race :p .
This is a great place for endurance racing or any riding/racing for that matter. Privately owned and Dr. Knob puts together some mean singletrack. Definately worth the drive.
