While looking at the Moots website and dreaming about a new frame, I was wondering are there really two different frames? I only see pictures of the Mooto-X YBB.........is the plain old Mooto-X and hardtail? If not, what are the differences? Pictures?
Thanks for answering my dumb questions.

Yup. mooto-x is a plain old hradtail, and the mooto-x ybb is the softtail.
I'd take either of them:-)

Thanks for clarifying that and for sure either one would do.
I put in a few hours a week during the summer months at a LBS and we order Moots frames for customers. They are absolutely beautiful works. Once I get back to work (out-sourced in May), I will have to save my sheckels or maybe sell off one of my kids!

Just wanted to drop in and off my $.02 FWIW.
Got my Mooto-X YBB in 2000 and it is my most cherished ride. They didn't offer the hard-tail then so it's nice to have the option...but I'll tell you that the YBB (combined with my WB CX-1) is about as smooooooooth as you could want and sticks to the trail like glue. You've already mentioned the quality of the work (outstanding!) but my middle-aged body likes the YBB more & more everytime I throw a leg over it -not that that was the reason I got it or that you should but it is sweet. I'm sure the HT is too (have ridden a kiddie wheel version -very nice...for a 'little" ride but never the two-niner HT).
I'm sure you'll be happy with either -hell, get both :D
Also, if you haven't already check out MikeSee's Great Divide Race Reports and corresponding equipment profiles...not that I needed validation on my bike but hearing his comments and incredible results were gratifying. Amazing stuff.
Best of luck,

On the side of the shock unit of the YBB, there is a very small allen key bolt. When tightened, it locks the unit out, making it a hardtail, and therefore the same thing as the straight Mooto X.
Said another way, if you want both, just buy the YBB version and carry a micro allen key.

That's good to know. Actually, since I am in the same "middle-aged" boat as ssRR, the YBB might just be the ticket. At age 48, I still feel strong with lots of good years left (one of my long distance riding buddys is my dad who is 71), but a little cushion on the tush might feel fine.

I would love to see you on a moots ybb--it could match the one that I am dreaming about. I'll be at TRTP on sunday am. hope to see you and Gary there although charlie is talking about a road ride.
