I've owned my Monocog for about 2-hours now and I just realized the rear doesn't have a quick release. I have also found that my multi-tool doesn't have the appropriate wrench size to remove the rear wheel. Curious what multi-tools you guys bring along with you on the trail for your Monocog. Should I buy another more expansive multi-tool...or should I just buy a small box wrench from Sears and call it a day?

i keep a wrench in my camel back. the weight is minimal, and without it would have been fu*ked one one occasion.

Just add an adjustable wrench along with the normal gear. Maybe a cog lockring wrench, i know mine takes an older style 8 spline bb wrench, if you plan on swapping gears during a ride or trying to figure out which gear works best.

I have one for my cross check and I think I use it more for the bottle opener than the wrench!! :ihih:

I always carry a 15mm box end wrench these days. I used to rely on the little 15mm my topeak alien hasuntil I flatted near the end of an adventure race and after 100+ miles of pisgah I lacked the strength to get enough torque out of the little wrench to free the bolt. So I threw some zip ties around the tube and hammered to the finish on a flat... next day I went out and bought a 15mm wrench ;)

I carry the standard multi tool and a 15mm gear wrench shorty in the camelback and it works great. Loosens and tightens the bolts quickly for that occasional rear flat.

Potentially a dumb question, but couldn't I just go to a quick release in the back? I seem to recall seeing a couple monocogs with a quick release in the rear.

Not sure about the quick release, but I wonder if you can change it out to a regular bolt on skewer that uses an allen key. Hope someone else chimes in on the best setup.

Also are both tugnuts required? I like how the MC comes with them standard but I am not so sure they are necessary if I am not running disc brakes and there isn't a massive amount of torque being applied to one side.

i changed mine to a hollow axle this morning so I could use an allen head skewer. You only need a tugnut on the drive side. I use a Surly Tugnut, they come with a washer that reduces the hole so you can run them with a skewer or solid axle.
