I have an 05' Monocog
Looking for some feedback from those that have built up another rear wheel. The original one is showing its age. Details on the hubs you have used. I have read the threads from those who have spread the spacing to 135, so you need not point that out.

I had a rear wheel built up using a Surly track hub, officially it's a 120mm spaced track hub, but I figured it would be easier to fit into the 110mm rearend then a 135mm hub, plus my team shop didn't want to strech my cog that far. I had a pair of wtb lazer beam 32h rim brake rims laying around for a while so I had the shop make up a wheel using that and a surly track hub. When I went to pick up the wheel and try it in the frame I was pleased to find that I was able to just remove 2 small axle spacers one on each side and it was perfectly at 110mm now, it will even fit in my 04 flight aluminum monocog. This is a good way it go since you don't have to find a 36hole rim, since most bmx race hubs are 36hole. I have done several races on this wheel and it works well and is a bit lighter then the older gtbmx hub and rynolite 36h wheel I was previously using, I can also run this wheel fixed/of course. I do have to get it tune up trued now cause it has loosened up some but I like it and will be trying it fixed once I get the wheel tuned up.
My steel monocog is one of the old original red monocogs without disc mounts.
I also have a flight monocog 04' and I tried to run that one with a atom lab FF rear disc brake rotor mount, but I couldn't get it to work, so I am still running that as a mullet, the rear wheel on that one is one of the rynolite and sun bmx FW hub wheels that jenson was selling a while ago. I havn't had any problems with that wheel, nice hub, just kinda heavy, I also have the matching front wheel but havn't used it in a while since I have a lighter v-brake front wheel on the steel monocog with v-brakes and have a disc front wheel on the aluminum monocog.
But if you can build your own wheels or get a decent priced custom build I suggest the surly track hubs, not really light but probably as light as most bmx hubs and able to run a fixed gear and easier to find and lighter 32h build, also availible in 36h if needed, but I already had the 32hole rim, and able to run a fixed cog as well. Mine are also fixed/fixed so I can run a fw or cog on either side of the wheel.

I appreciate that input a lot. I had not given thought to the track hub being close in size. My 05 monocog isn't the main ride, but still gets a bit of commuting miles in as my 10 mile commute can be about 7 miles of dirt, just depends what mood I am in. So would like to keep that bike going for a few more miles. Thanks

when (if?) did redline change the rear to 135mm spacing? I'm looking at an 07 MC 26", and different rear spacing would be a definite issue...

I think the 06 models and newer have the 135mm spacing. 110 isn't bad, but your pretty much stuck with the stock hub if you want to run disc brakes. This was one of the reasons I sold my 05 Monocog.
Did Redline ever do a Flight Aluminum 26" with sliding dropouts?

With 110 spacing you can run a BMX single speed up with no issues.

the problem I found when looking to build a new rear wheel was that BMX hubs generally have a different spoke count than a mtn rim.

I do have a pair of original rear Redline wheels Hanging in my garage. That rear hub just needs rebuilt. I was trying to figure out if I could sell them anywhere. But Ebay buyers seemed to be not interested. Especially since they are a bit loose in the hub without a rebuild.

I personally did the All thread space out. I now run a Spot hub with a salsa semi rim. It works great, and took maybe 15 minutes with $5 in supplies.

Here are my results (as posted in another thread) around post 20.

The more I think about this, and especially after the good results that mattKHS had with I may just go that route and give myself more options than keeping it spaced 110. Since I started this thread I have popped the spokes two more times. Getting old nursing that original wheel back to health each time. But I sure do enjoy the ride on that bike, hate to give it up.

if you want a back up 110 wheel, i'd be happy to send them your way. Really, just pay shipping or so, and they are yours.

I hear all the rear needs is new bearings. I just didnt care to mess with it.

Ohh on my method. I dont think I mentioned this, but I did need to use a clamp to keep the all thread from popping out once I was getting close, as the pressure was pretty tight, And the washers wanted to slide on the horizontal slides. I also would recommend either thick washers, or two washers on each side, as mine started to warp into the drop outs.

Just as a follow up, I have been riding this SS pretty much non stop since the fix. Easily 50 - 60 miles a week with no issues at all. Its my commuter, and my fun bike on the mountain. My poor $2500 Specialized Epic is collecting dust. Maybe I should turn it into a FS SS.
