Hey Tim or anyone else. Im looking for a used air shock for my '96 San Andreas. I have a Stratos Helix Pro on it now. Im thinking a Cane Creek AD12, Cloud Nine 5th Element Air or a Manitou air shock. Would I just use the bushings that are on the Stratos shock or would I need new bushings?

Usually the bushings are different diameters from make to make.
Actually, the bushings are pressed into the shock's eyes. I think you might be talking about the adaptor hardware.
You will almost certainly need new hardware to fit the new shock to the your San Andreas.
I don't know what size hardware is needed for a 96. That will have to be answered by Tim.

Does someone out there have an answer? What shocks out there will use the same adapters as my Stratos shock? And, If I buy a shock that needs different adapters, where would I get them? I mean, I cant expect companies to still make them for a bike that is 12 years old.

I'll bet money, they still make the hardware that will fit your San An.
That thing must use either M6 or M8 bolts, which is standard, mounting hardware, bolt hole sizes. Then all you need to do, is measure the inside distance of the shock mounts.
Lets say (hypothetically) That your upper shock mount measures 22mm inside between the plates and it uses a 8mm mounting bolt. All you do is order a M8 X 22 hardware set for the upper mount.
I wouldn't be surprised if Tim popped up, and told you its the same hardware as for your 03.
The adapters are cheap BTW.

I was just looking at the Cane Creek site. Thier Cloud Nine shock has the same diamater and width mounting holes on the shock so, I could use the same mounting hardware (which is the correct term) that is on the Stratos. I think the Cloud Nine would be a good shock for it.
No, I just looked the mounting hardware are different sizes.

Mounting Hardware ! That was the word I was looking for. I've had some real brain farts lately.
Why are you so bent, on using the original hardware?
Later, Eric.

I guess I don't really have to. But I have two sets of hardware. If I pick up a used shock I'll have to find a set of hardware that will fit.

When you order a new shock you ca ask for any size mounting hardware.
The old SA front is 22mm wide with a m6 bolt. Hmmm, no it's actually wider on the earlier SAs without the front VPS shock mounts. Get a metric ruler or calipers to measure the width between the two uprights.
The rear mount is a also m6, and has a width of 15mm, 17mm, or 19mm, you'll need to measure it too. I don't remember and am too lazy to go out to the garage.:D
