Were all 110 spots filled last year? I'm thinking I wanna give it a go, but have to wait a few months to see if I'll be able to attend. Is it likely that a spot will be open in late April?

Usually full by mid-March. There will be a waiting list.

Guess I'll have to turn the screws a little tighter to have an idea of where I stand sooner.

Thanks for the 411,

Hey Shiggy...

I know your da man when it comes to tires. A few friends of mine and I want to ride the CreamPuff this year for the first time. I'm riding WTB NanoRaptors right now but I'm thinking of picking up a set of the Nokian NBX 2.0 Lites for racing (three 24 HR races plus the CreamPuff). Will the Nokians help enough to justify spending the money on them? Or should I just stick with the Nanos?

Also, can you tell a little about the course itself? Is it a full climb on fireroads and then singletrack downhill? Or is it mixed climbing and singletrack throughout the race?

Thanks for all and any input you can give! And what's your website again?

General Registration is now open!

The Nanos would work pretty well. The NBX Lites should be pretty good but they are a lower volume tire. You may need to keep more "on top" of them as you get tried.

Pythons work pretty well, too. They are about the "slickest" tire (tread-wise) I recommend. A full knobby is faster and better braking. Semi-slicks slide more and loosen the trail surface making it even harder to find traction.

Good tires for the 'Puff include:

Conti Explorer Pro 2.1
Conti Vertical Pro 2.3
Schwalbe Little Albert/Albert 2.1/2.25
Schwalbe Jimmy/Big Jim 2.1/2.25*
Specialized Enduro Pro 2.0/2.2
Michelin XL S 2.10*
Kenda Klaw 2.1*

Maybes:

Kenda Karma 2.0
Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.1/2.25

* good for wet or dry conditions

The course is three laps. About half climbing gravel logging roads, half singletrack descending. There are some descents on the gravel and about 1500' of climbing on the trail. Total climbing per lap is about 6300'.

Thanks Shiggy!

That info's really helpful. Now I have a plan of attack and hopefully all goes well. I'm sure 30 miles into the ride I'll be thinking 'What the F! did I get myself into?!' But I'll just keep grinding away. :D

The bad news is the 'Puff is full. The roster filled yesterday (20 feb). We are accepting 35 riders to the waiting list.

That bites! We have our apps filled out and were sending them in this week. Man that sold out fast. Do you know if they may expand it anytime in the future? Do you know of any other endurance races anywhere in the northwest (OR, WA, ID, BC)?

Thanks again for the info.

The 'Puff field limit will not be increased. It would put too much pressure on the trail, add to the work load for the prep and change the character of the event.

The Test of Metal (sp) in BC is the week before the 'Puff. There may be a 300 miles in 3 days event in Oakridge in the fall.

The Test is a fantastic race on a challenging course. Myself and some friends have done it 5 of the last 6 years and after every race we swear it'll be the last time. We're in again this year as a final tune-up for the CCP100.

Some highlights:

- 800 racers lined up in the parking lot of the local hockey arena. What could be more Canadian eh?
- A 10 year old girl belting out the national anthem over the PA just before the gun goes off.
- 1600 knobby tires buzzing around you for the first 5 minutes as you hammer up the highway, trying not to crash and get run over.
- Cimbing at 95% heartrate on steepening residential streets, the citizenry cheering you like Lance gets it in France (well, maybe a bit less rabid).
- Finally, DIRT! And a reprieve from climbing as you fly down a narrow smooth line on a loose gravel road. Make a mistake here and your race could be a simple game of catch-up as one woman had to do in 2001. She wiped out, landing on the opposite side of the road as her bike did. She had to wait until the entire line of racers zipped by before crossing to get back on her bike. One crash and she went from the top 100 to DFL at #800.
- From there it just gets better, 9-mile climb, Bonk Hill, the Powerhouse Plunge, and Crumpit ("Crampit") Woods. Oh man, the agony!!!!!!!!!!!

I signed up yesterday and was #320 of 800. Two more weeks and it'll be full.

Dave's right...the Test is awesome and it's a great single speed course too (don't listen to your gearie friends)!

The Test of Metal is great!!! Here's a report I wrote up about the ToM last year:

http://www.dirtworld.com/races/RaceStory.asp?id=488

Marteeta, were you on an Iffy singlespeed last year at the ToM, Round & Round 24 hr race and the Creampuff? I think you passed me on the first hill in the ToM (when I say "passed" I mean "crushed to dust") but I was sad to see you sick at the Creampuff the next weekend. I was on a green BASS at the 24hr race & the ToM and a silver Kikapu at the Creampuff.

You giving the Creampuff another try this year? I'll be there, hopefully a little less fat & slow than I was last year (I had a terrible day there last year; one of the worst rides of my life, and dropped out 1/4 of the way through the second lap). I think I'm gonna skip the Test of Metal this year to hopefully be better rested for the Creampuff.

Mo,
You found me out! Yes, I'm the Iffy SS girl :-) Thanks for your assessment of my "pass" at the Test last year (you're too kind)...I was about 50 feet short of cleaning Bonk Hill and Lava Flow was a bit harsh, but it, too, can be conquered. And yes, I seemed to have a bit of a flu bug at the Puff...oh well, it happens. I think I remember you at the Spokane race though...you must introduce yourself at the Puff this year (yep, I'm going to be there). I'm doing the Test and the Puff back to back again this year...more miles = more fun, right? If I don't see you in Squamish (in case you change your mind), I'll see you in Oakridge!

Good luck with the training...just keep repeating "the Creampuff is fun, the Creampuff is fun, I love to climb, I love to climb"...hee hee!
