Can somebody explain to me the difference between the Outback Wagon and the Legacy Outback Wagon? Is one higher off the ground than the other? Are there any other differences?
I think I've decided to buy an '00 - '02 Outback Wagon, but this whole 'Legacy' issue is confusing the heck out of me.
Thanks for your input.
They're the same thing. The Outback is based on the Legacy platform. Dig around on Edmunds.com and you'll get some good info.

while the outback has about an inch and a half more clearance, the legacy actually has more cargo room because it has smaller wheel wells. personally we have never had any clearance problems with our 02 legacy wagon. it has 18k on it now and haven't had any issues with it, great car!! just depends on if you need the clearance which most people don't, legacy's are definately cheaper, but kind of rare these days, they make many more outbacks.

Outback used to be a trim level of the Legacy. It was so popular that Subaru decided to make Outback its own model line, I think in 2000. If you're looking at a '00-'02, then there's no such thing as a Legacy Outback.
