I'm Chad from Westby ( Home of the White Knuckle MTB challenge ). I usually ride at the HPP trails in LaCrosse at least once a week weather permitting. This year I've also ridden Holtzinger lodge, Levis Mound, Blue Mounds and a bunch of other unknown trails. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get back to Blue Mounds and also try Cam-Rock, Decorah Iowa trails and hopefully some of the Cable area trails before the pilgrimage to Moad & Fruita in October.
I usually ride either a gray Giant AC2 or a red Trek Fuel 80. Might be getting rid of the Trek soon so who knows what I'll get then.

Dustin. From Milwaukee, actually New Berlin for the SE WI folks. I'm trying to follow up the best year of biking I had last year. So far, it's so so. Definitely need to get some more rides, and variety in. So far this year I've ridden South Kettles, 9 Mile, and Levis Mounds a couple of times each for the most part. Other stomping grounds are Sheboygan/Quarry, North Kettles, Bairds Creek, Blue Mounds (haven't been able to hit it yet this year - seems like every weekend I'd be able to get a ride in, the trails are closed due to weather, like the last two weekends!, I plan on trying again this weekend).

I'm within riding distance to the Whitnal Park/Milwaukee County MTB trails, but they have been a mud hole since early June. It's a shame, cause it's so close. The newer trails really need to get some traffic on them too so they get a grove in them. Hopefully the second half of the summer will turn things around.

Plan on hitting Razorback Ridges later next week. Also am planning a trip up to CAMBA early this fall (can snow in October up der hey), and a trip to St. Louis/Ozarks later this fall (once it cools down a bit).

Marty from Viroqua here. Ride a Hunter 29" w/EBB set up as a SS or a 1x8 depending on my mood for the month. I've JUST (as in August 20, we're in town Chad) moved to the Viroqua area, so not much riding in the area as of yet. Looking forward to hitting up as much as I can in the area. Esp Bluemounds, HPT, and Cam-Rock. I've done Levis a bunch and love it. Same w/Holzinger Lodge and Decorah. Looking forward to getting to Decorah and SugarBottoms too. Hell, since I'm closer, I want to get to Berryman more often too!

Currently living in Madison (and will for awile). Formerly from La Crosse where I went to grad school and worked in a shop up there for a bit. I still get up to LaX quite frequently to visit my old co-workers and friends and my GF is from there and her parents and brothers are still living there. I like to hit all the usual trail heads that have already been mentioned...HPT, Blue Mound SP, Cam-Rock, Levis, Southern Kettles, Devil's Head, 9 Mile (although I've never just ridden there...only raced), and try to hit a few WORS and WEMS races here and there. I miss being able to get on the mtb in town and hitting the dirt of TNT in La Crosse within about 10 minutes. You have to drive to mtb in Madison!

Depending on the mood, I'll either be on my VCW rigid SS (most of the time), my brand new Klein Palomino, or my SS Surly Cross-Check on it's rare journey off road.

Not entirely. You can always hit Quarry for a quick fix. Most people don't get into it but a few of us are hooked, I hardly ride anywhere else these days. If I do drive it's usually to Camrock or Blue Mounds.

Your best bet for learning the park is to hookup with a croud of locals for a round of follow the leader, tuesday nights are the unoficial ride-at-quarry night.

From Lake Mills, WI. Rode camrock3 for the first time a few weeks ago, south kettles, north kettles, shebogan quarry, 9mile (if you havent riden 9mile do it, but find somone that knows the sweet trails to hit). I ride an old old cannondale f1000, before the crap headshocks. Only judy xc with the silver colored case.

Chad from West Bend. Go to school in Whitewater. I just got back into Mt. Biking this past year, road biking isn't as fun. Own a Trek 6700, best buy for budget. Haven't been able to get to too many trails yet this year. Go to Ice Age (Glacial Blue Hills) in WB once a week at least, have some good single track paths off the main trail. Also been out to Greenbush Trails and New Fane. When I head back to the Southern Kettle I'll for sure be going to Cam-Rock and John Muir/Emma-Carlin Trails. I also want to get to Blue Mound and the Governor Dodge Trails before the winter rolls in. If anyone has any suggestions for good trails anywhere in WI I'd be grateful for the insight. (especially in the Northern and Southern Kettles since I spend most of my time in these areas)

I'm originally from Stevens Point, but now live in Oregon. If you are going to be in A-Town, make sure you hit up the Reforestation Camp outside of GB. Good riding there... and if you don't mind a bit longer drive, get over to 9 Mile County forest. I'd consider this to be the best trail system within an hour and a half from A-Town. If you do ride 9 Mile, make sure you hit up the newest trail, Poop Rock. If you can come close to cleaning this one, you are the bomb. This may be some of the most techincal stuff I've ever ridden.
One more close to Stevens Point is Standing Rocks county park. There has been some new single track built here in the last two years. Some decent climbing for the area too. I know there are at least 8 miles of "new" single track, and many more miles of dbl track ski trails that you can rail. WORS used to host races there in the early 90's. Check it out, and have some fun!

Todd from Oconomowoc, I work in Hartland. Mostly I ride Southern Kettle, Cam Rock and the few other small trails in the area. I went to Winona State University in Winona MN ... so I've done a lot of Mississippi bluff trails, Holtzinger Lodge was our norm. Once a year I take a Mt. Bike trip somewhere for a couple weeks so I've been all over the country...last year I was in southern Oregon which was awesome... Idaho is cool too. I commute alot to work and I love Single Speeds. Currently I ride a 2004 Gary Fisher SuperCal 29er for my geared mtb, a 2004 Salsa Juan Solo ebb single speed mtb, 2004 LeMond Poprad cyclocross frame built up as a single speed (mostly for townie riding). I plan to get a full suspensioin mtb in '05 but don't which one yet...maybe a Fisher Sugar or a Trek Fuel.

Favorite place to ride currently is the Reforestation Camp. Lots of singletrack trails, and the bayshorebikeclub is always doing trail maintenance and upkeep on the land. Well worth the $15 annual fee to ride there.

Currently riding an older Fisher Kaitai setup for commuting a couple days a week. Quite a workout towing the kid in the trailer to daycare then on to work. Main weekend ride is a Ti Airborne Black Widow. As if anybody really cared.

I'm quite familar with 9 Mile, but have never heard of Poop Rock. Is it the nickname for trail #8 way back in the southwest corner of the forest? Or is it the super technical loop off of trail #8 at the bottom of the "downhill" section? If it's not one of these, where is it? I'd like to give it a shot!

My fav at 9 Mile is trail #5. With all the whoops and tight rolling track its just sweet. Get in a groove and do two laps - trying to catch more air on every pass!

Pretty much only go to Baird Creek. Love the variety.

Right now I'm rolling on stock IRC BackCountry's (2.25) on my Sugar. OK. Definitely think there is better out there. I just ordered a set of WTB Weirwolf 2.3 race (tubed). Was looking for something a bit more agressive. The Weirwolf got good reviews on this site. IMO in WI you need a good all around tire, unless you stick to gravel or are willing to change your tires every weekend pending conditions. I need a tire that stays on all year, and handles well in all conditions - spring/summer mud of Kettles and Levis Mound(nothing to nasty - not into mudd'n all that much), summer dry hardpack of S. Kettles, dry rocky of Nine Mile - the whole range. I may have the WTBs mounted up by this weekend. I'll definitely right up a review after a couple of rides.

I agree with all of the above...I don't want to be changing tires constantly depending on conditions either. Except for some of the mud that we had early this year during the rainy season, I've had really good luck with Conti Vertical Pro 2.3. They are a smallish 2.3 but they hook up very nicely, especially on the front. I'm also running a Specialized Enduro Pro 2.2 on the back of my SS mostly because there isn't much room for something bigger. It's a nice rear tire and I haven't tried it on the front yet and probably won't. I've got a Weirwolf 2.5 on the front of my SS and I like it well enough to not want to get a new tire every time I ride that bike. Some friends of mine swear by the Intense CC 2.25 tire for all around use too. I haven't tried one yet because it always seems like QBP is out of them...they have them right now though!

Back in the stone ages I competed in a lot of Time Trials (Crono = time, Metro = travel) road, of course. Although I still ride a lot; road/ commute /MTB, I do not have time to train to race and respect myself. I started the name Cronometro back in the prodigy days. I am guessing about 20 years ago and just stuck with it. I do not work for Collin or His company but I have bought a lot of stuff from him in the old days.

I ride mostly up in the CAMBA trails and over in Northern Michigan. For a 9 months out of the year I go to school in Washington, and thus miss out on riding in Wisconsin far too much. I rarely stop by this forum, I'm mostly over at the singlespeed one.

My main ride is a DIY Ebbed Gary Fisher Marlin. I'm currently working on a fixie from an old Trek road frame. I also have an old Barracuda mtb, which may get turned into a geared bike when I realize that I can't afford a 29er.

It's cool you respect the trail closed signs. I wish more would. They are jeopardizing all our riding at Nine Mile by riding closed trails. It is public property but we are fighting other groups that would like MTB to stop there. We are trying to manage the trails and when one gets over ridden or gets to wide we close it down to heal. It will be opened again. Sorry for the change in the numbering system. With new trails and some changes confused many. Next time you are in the area lets ride!

I was wondering why the small loop off of #8 (old numbering system) isn't really maintained. I found it by looking at the map closely, and searching for a while, last year. It's one of my favorites even though it's tough as sh!t. Last couple of times I've been able to ride it dab free. Anyway, is this no longer a recognized trail?, or is it kind of being kept as a for hardcore riders only - low traffic under the radar kind of trail. I would be nice if the leaves, twigs would be cleared off each spring, but at the same time it keeps it hidden. Have any comments on this?

Also, do you know of any other trails like this in the park, secretive technical hardcore stuff, that you'd be willing to share?

Anyway, I just got seriously into mtb'ing last summer. Did a lot of riding on the Green Circle's hidden little singletrack bits. Can't wait for Spring and building a trail system at my cabin.

What's this Green Circle you mentioned. Never head of it before. What kind of mileage is there? Terrain? Steven's point is a nice place to be - you have mad town to the south, Wausau to the north, LaCross to the west, etc.

Green circle is 30 or so mile loop around Stevens Point and adjoinging cities. It's mostly gravel fire-road width, has some road sections (not a lot) and some paved trail. It links together a bunch of parks in the city and also has sections that go farther out into the suburbs and through some undeveloped river valleys. All the singletrack within riding distance of Stevens Point is accessible from the circle, but it's all hidden so unless you know where to look.... There's probably about 4-5 miles of singletrack with all three sections (the island, airport trail, patch street) combined. It's definitely not worth coming here just to ride, but if you live here it's really nice to take a spin on.

I'm Walt Hougas, Madison area. I ride a blue 2003 Enduro. The trails around this area have been mentioned by other riders.

I'm a member of the local mountain bike group, Capitol Offroad Pathfinders (CORP). We're pushing hard to cut more trail at Blue Mound, Cam-Rock, Fitchburg, and possibly New Glarus State Woods this year. The preliminary work schedule is up on the forum area of worba.org. Hope you can join us, I'm really excited about the work ahead. We completed the main loop at Blue Mound last fall, and have permission to build more singletrack, including a short section through a boulder field. The new area (Pleasure Valley) will have significantly more vertical than the existing trail.

If you've never been to a work day, hope you'll believe me when I say it's almost as much fun as riding. Not quite, but you get a chance to meet new people who are your fellow mountain bikers. Plus you can do it when the trails are too wet to ride, then you get to ride the new trail when it dries out.

I'm hoping to to ride at Levis Mound several times this summer, plus 9 Mile. Also hope to get back to Sylamo Arkansas. Rode there last spring, and it was most impressive. Picture Blue Mound with another 18 miles of trails and 2-3 times the vertical.

Tim in Madison. Mostly riding to regain some shape other than pear. Used to race Expert & Cat 2 but then school, marriage & a child have taken over as higher priorities. My favorite trails used to be John Muir & Emma Carlin at the Kettles but I did a cross race at Camrock about 6 years ago and it was a nice flat park. There were some trails up north that were reminiscent of Texas but that was going on a decade ago... anyway, I'm mostly a roadie, but nothing beats bouncing off trees. I used to be service manager for a couple of shops here in town but still am on good terms with the owners... go figure. I commute daily and since I tweaked my knee (MCL) I'm giving up soccer until it heals so that means I get to ride more.

This is obviously a very late reply, but hope it helps someone. If i remember right, Appleton is on the north side of lake Winnibego. On the east side of lake winnibego, WORS has a race called the Calumet Sun Run. They are fun trails that I think are close to you. Check out www.wors.org and go to the events section for this race. It will give you directions.

another rider from Menomonie. I go to UW Stout there. I ride a hartail GT unless I borrow a friends bike. The trails around menomonie are pretty much shite. The only good trails are illegal to ride, which doesnt stop me most of the time, but I would hate to get caught or worse, hit someone walking on the trail.

To all you NineMilers: Where can I pick up a map for ninemile? (if there is a such thing) I have been there 3 times since I found out about it last week, but I havent hit all the trails for fear of getting lost. Maybe I just need to "man up" and get myself lost. Also, what is this I hear about a new name system. I heard the flower trail...poop trail etc, but all the trails are still marked with numbers. I dont get it. Which is which? (and maybe the map would answer this question) Thanks

Also, if anyone knows when the next building/maintanance meeting is, I would be down to help.. I have some trail making experience and would love to contirbute to these great trails. Let me know. That and I would like to meet some more bikers in the area.

Anyway, I just got seriously into mtb'ing last summer. Did a lot of riding on the Green Circle's hidden little singletrack bits. Can't wait for Spring and building a trail system at my cabin.

We spent almost 2 weeks in Point, and had a blast. Only got to ride once on Green Circle and 2 trips to 9 mile. We were so busy with her family and other little treks (and hanging out for hours at a time at Hilltop) that I just kept forgetting to hook up with you....

Good news is that you all may have another rider/trail worker, etc. in the area! I liked it so much up there that my fiance and I are considering moving up to Point for good.

I loved the Green Circle (need a Cross bike for this if I move up) and 9 mile, and am making notes on the other trails that are mentioned here.

I'll keep in touch next time we make the trip up!

Chris from North Prairie here...that's about 10 miles from the Kettle Morraine South trails. I ride an ano orange Superlight, mostly at the kettles but have been known to travel. Moab, Fruita, Winter Park, Snowshoe, Phoenix. Also hit Levis, Camrock, and some top secret stashes. Hope to get to Blue Mounds & Kickapoo soon.

Now live in Cedarburg since April. Used to live a couple of miles from C-Ridge in Franklin and rode there at least 1x week for years when weather allowed.

I ride a 2003 Sugar 3+ upgraded a bit. Have ridden Blue Mounds this summer. Love the new trails at Emma and the Connector to make it 1 way in most places. Folks live 45 minutes from Levis Trow and an hour from 9-Mile so have ridden there quite a bit. Used to make a yearly trip to Cable 5+ years ago but ended with kids. Still try to do a few WORS races to get some trail variety.

I love challenging trails; the more hills the better. West Bend is my favorite place to ride and the 6.3 mile loop I do there will kick most peoples a$$.

If anyone wants to ride let me know. Any time, anywhere. I have a Light&Motion Solo so night rides are no problem. Gets a bit chilly this time of year but I ride in winter also with my studded tires. Tuesday night my buddy and I usually ride at WB.

Are you talking about North Kettles - Greenbush? I've heard of some XC stuff in West Bend proper. I'm always looking for new stuff. Please specify. Thx.

You'll get e-mails about rides (day and night) as well as trail days and meetings of the Milwaukee WORBA Chapter. Coming events include the Turkey Hurl Ride and end of year trail work at Crystal Ridge and the Alpha Trail.

How bout some of you more experianced riders getting together and helping us rookies get started.

Just stepped on a bike after over a year (well an exceciser since it is cold) to try and get ready for spring.

Don't know anyone or where to ride........HELP!

I live in Portage and work in Madison.

GaryB - Fortunately there quite a few good spots near you (less than 2hr. drive), unfortunately most of them are not beginner level.

- Closest would be Devil's Head. If you can't ride up hill for about 20 minutes at a time, and handle some bumps, don't bother with it. Trails are mostly intermediate level, but the climbing adds in the challenge.
Other worthy mentions:
- Cam-Rock in Cambridge/Rockland
- Blue Mound State Park in Blue Mound
- Standing Rocks just east of Stevens Point
- Nine Mile County Forest west of Wausau
- Levis Mounds west of Neilsville

All of these are intermediate with certain trails worthy of expert classification. Parts of 9 Mile could be considered beginner if you stay on the XC ski-trails. The singletrack is more intermediate and expert.

Read some of the reviews of these spots from this site. The reviews are becoming a bit dated now, but they will give you a general idea of the terrain. Most of the above have websites with maps/trail hotlines available. Check them out. Some are open year round, some have seasons, some close when wet, some don't - you get the point, save yourself a trip, phone or web first. Don't ask why, let's just say I've learned over the years.

How about Kettle Moraine just east of Whitewater on highway 12? Perfect ride for someone who has been off the bike for a while. Not too tough, multi loops from 5 to 25 miles. Get there early on the weekend or the hordes will run you over.

Madison has Quarry Park behind Whole Foods on University Ave. It's as tough as you want to make it, lots of fun stunts and little stuff too. Whee!

Blackhawk in Middleton has trails, but you have to join the club to ride them.

Sheboygan. Terry Andrae state park?

I think there are some metro trails in or near Milwaukee. See the other posts in this thread.

Matt from Madison...been riding a long time (used to ride the singletrack behind the airport in Point, before the greencircle, and around in schmeekle..shhhh...ahhh memories), tapered off awhile, and kicking in more the last couple years...this year I'm hoping to ride A LOT. Been riding a Fisher Big Sur, which is now my ss work bike, looking at a new bike for this year.
Big fan of 9 mile, Rock Lake, Cam Rock, Blue Mounds....want to get to the UP again, Reforestation Camp, Kewaunee (my parents live near Green Bay), Standing Rocks.

Want to get invloved in some trailwork around here this year too...gotta get our (the wife rides a lot too) worba/corps membership in and come out to some workdays :cool:

Think I will give devels lake a try this year. May even start building a single track at the in-laws 180 acre farm............lots of deep wash outs in the woods....

If you're near Madison stay tuned to the local news because a new metro area trail system is now official, and we plan on making a lot of progress this season. You'd get the combo of experince you mentioned, and working with others would speed the progress.

I am guessing they are talking about the trails in and around Glacial Blue Hills. There is a "Main" trail that runs all through the city (some you can and some you can't ride on) and in Glacial Blue Hills there is a ton of tight single track to explore. It can keep you busy for awhile since you can switch up all of your loops. There isn't a specified direction to ride so be cautious if the parking lot looks fairly full, and watch out for hikers on nice weekends...they tend to not pay attention to what is going on around them. I have had to move at a snails pace and finally just ask them to let me pass. Mt bikers maintain all the trails too, go figure. I like Greenbush too, but I'll take glacial over that anyday...more technical. Depends on what you like to ride.

I am sorry. I meant local bike related info via web and email. We usually get info out here, we put work days on the worba.org site's calendar, and the south central WI trail folks use a Yahoo Group mail list called CORP. We also put a brochure out at bike shops and other places that has work days listed.

I'm currently in Waupun, about 6 more weeks and I graduate from UW-Oshkosh and I'll probably be jumping down to Madison. I've ridden the basic trails in Madison, Devil's Lake, tried one up in winona, MN. Rode ALL over the Wiowash(sp) trail up in Oshkosh. I'm getting antsy to get back in shape!

I'm in Stevens Point and always looking for the next great trail. Usually ride the Island single track but am going to try out Standing Rocks when it opens on May 1st.

From Wausau. Mostly ride/race on the road but can be seen out at Nine Mile if the moon is in the right phase. I won that WORS thing a couple times (Elite) a bunch of years ago but have since drifted off into obscurity, probably because if I cant win I dont want to play:)

Finally getting rid of the hard tail and jumping aboard a Top Fuel this year. My old bones will love me now.

Check out the WORBA page (worba.org) for info on the Lowes Creek trail system. There is also a WORS race in the area on July 2nd...I'm not sure if this is on the Lowes Creek trails or if it's different. I did the race last year and was impressed with the course.
