Got this frame 2nd hand and ... trying to remove the linkages to clean out the pivots and noticed that it does not run on bearings but on what looks like a pin/axel/bush that has been pressed in.

Any ideas how I will be able to press them out without specialist tools?

Hey this is my new baby and would like to clean out the pivots and give a new coat of grease ... before thrashing it out on the trails ...

One more thing ... I noticed that with the shock removed it takes quite a bit to move the linkages ... anyone tried that and noticed the same? I guess it will reduce bobbing under pedaling forces?

BTW here is the frame ... :D whenever I look at it there is always a smile on my face ...

Here is what this beast will have on the font and rear ...

301864

I know the Lyrik is a tad overdoing it but I got it at quite a discount and I think deep down inside I might be going for a FR in future ... ;)

This is a 2" stroke shock ... does anyone know if I were to remove the bung in the middle ... will I be effectively increasing the stroke to 2.25"? ... will keep the DT air shock to see the difference ...

have most of the other components but waiting for the tyres & brake hose ... :madman: postal strike last week ... will have to wait before assembling the baby ...

Do not remove the "bung". That is your bottomout "insurance". All coil shocks have a bushing on the shaft to prevent metal on metal contact. And no it will not be 2.25" stroke.

Have fun with the new ride. Looks nice.

chinaman - Frame looks good, rode today with a guy on a CC...

They seem to ride best in 4 inch mode... I mean reading through the post, I think you knkow, but would be careful with the Lyrik on the CC... May well be best to run it at a shorter travel setting... Hard when a fork can take the bangs so to speak, makes you more inclined to do stuff....

Sounds perfect though for an 08 FR though.....

chinaman the bike is made more for cross country the biggest fork that i would put on is fox van 140 you could have a warranty issue with that big of a fork. Whafe is right it works better in the 4inch setting. I have a cc and have tried it in all settings and that what i found to work the best with a rp23 rear shock.

As for the pivots feeling a little stiff when the shock is removed, it's supposed to be that way. The frame should not sag under its own weight, it should take about 3 kilos of force to sag it. That's what I remember reading at the mtb-news.de forum.

Cheers guys ... just as I thought ... which is why i have dialled it down to 130mm to use with the cc.

Contacted Nicolai UK and they have a second hand 2007 FR ... have seen it with CF on it  ... so have convince myself to get it ...

I got the CC before anything else which is why I will be a bit stuck if I were to get another frame ... ... the 'home boss' will not be happy ...

Absolute loved the ride ... no pedal bobs on either the air shock or the coil. Really loved the 4 bar sus.

real nice, chinaman! Love it!

did you have to "customize" anything to get the rotors to work with the 08 calipers? I remember some people had to file a bit off the 765 calipers to get the rivets to clear before..

chinaman

hey cris thanks.

nope ... just bolt on and it cleared alright. i used the 765 with hope rotors on my ARC and had to do a bit of filing but not the new 08' XTs.

the adaptors are shimanos as well. could not find a rear shimano 183mm post to IS adaptor, and had to use a front 203mm post to IS. hope adaptors are slightly wider than shimanos.

Yeah I know but since i'm going to have an Ion ST in less than a month for DH races, I'll be looking for a smaller bike than the reign in order to have a lighter bike :D
Besides, I already have a bmxtb for dirt jump and street riding, so it's gonna be my 3rd NICOLAI
The most difficult thing will be as usually to choose the colour :madman:

chinaman, looking sweet bro. Has come out real well. The stealthy speed demon bike....

Bring on the pictures

Good to see we are building up to a nice collection of Nicolai on the site... Takes time but we are getting there....

samwell, agree, the hardest thing is to choose the colours, I will have Nicolai Triplets soon too, and the last frame I ordered, the hardest thing is the colour... I am so shallow....LOL

Hey Chinaman, nice ride. I am having a hard time deciding between the Titus Motolite or the Nicolai helius CC with a light (ish) weight build and RP23. I think it would be a rocket!

Sweet bike, congratulations!!

BTW, do you have any problems using XT calipers with the Hope rotors? Some people complain about the rivets of the rotors touching the caliper/adapter...

Regards!

The rivets did touch the caliper for my XT765 with a 160mm on the rear of my Yeti ARC . I had to file off slightly the area marked in red. Ever so slightly ... not enough to worry about loosing the strength on the mounting tab. The thing is as it is silver in colour, you cannot actually tell that I have filed it . Clearance is less than 1mm; between the 'red bit' and the rotor rivets ;)

With the nicolai and the 08 XT ... no filing necessary ... all fits perfectly. The 08 XT is designed ever so slightly different. Had a bit more room to play with.

Yep, agree the colour issue really gives me issues! :D

At least when you buy a Yeti, you dont have to choose, cause the Yeti colour is the monty cool colour....

I am happy with the colour I have chosen for the FMXTB, gonna go well with my Deity kit, had to get a new seat post and saddle, the stuff off of the Mob will not fit.... Fizik are loving me, 3 saddles in 3 weeks.... Got to talk to the lovely sounding Italian lady 4 times, oh how the mind can play games.....

Warp, yep the FR is exciting me, so much happening at present..... Bikes coming out my ears.....LOL

I am not able to properly adjust my rear derailleur ... some how if it shifts well in the larger sprockets, when I get to the lower ones, they dont seem to want to shift ... I need to double shift and release just to get the chain to move to the next sprocket.

If I adjust such that it shifts ok in the smaller sprockets, when I move to the larger ones, same problem arises.

I am using full housing and SRAM 661 chain with a 08XT low normal derailleur. I suspect that the housing is not as stiff. I am using standard Transfil housing.
