I am putting back together my old San Andreas fro '96. I can't remember the BB size I need. I found a square taper Truvativ at a good price, it's 68mm x 113mm. But I think my BB is 71mm, so can I ue the 68mm unit?

I just measured it. It's actual width is a solid 72mm. If I remember right the Truvativ BB comes with a spacer. So am I right by saying I can use the 68mm unit with the spacer and get the chain to line up properly?

You need a 73 BB. Nearly all BBs will be 68 or 73mm, other than the new style 83mm and 100mm DH style.

The spacers included with the Truvativ BBs are to allow you to use a 73mm BB on a bike with a 68mm shell.

Hope this helps.

Oh ya I remember now. Don't know why I was thinking 71mm.

How wide can I go on the BB? I remember I had a 113mm on it before but the front mech to rear tire clearance was really poor. Can I use a wider BB?

Sure, get a 73mm x 118mm. The 118mm spindle will set the chainrings more outward and give you more clearance between the front derailleur cage and tire.

Thanks Tim! I just picked up an inexpensive LX 73 x 118 at Wheel Word. Now it's time to build!
