Has of ya'll mtbr's heard of it? Seems as though it is the the underlying reason for a lot of the shat going on in the political-military-economic sector. The topic deserves a closer look, especially if you think that hydrocorbon energy will be cheap and readily available for at least a few more decades. I think the peak of production is here now, poised to start an irreversible decline while demand for it will continue to increase.
I , for one, am glad to live in a rural area, with a garage full of bikes, a large organic garden, and a well insulated dwelling with wood stove. Plus, I know all the local wooded areas by bike, where the deer like to go and a few natural springs. How are you preparing?

It seems like you can find someone predicting the oil peak in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc... I'm certainly not qualified to comment on whether any of the near future predictions have merit or will come true, but what if they're wrong?

What if oil fields refill themselves, or if we can get oil in ways not previously thought:

What if technology comes up with a way to re-extract oil efficiently:

The future should be interesting, whatever it may bring.

I took a look at the links you posted in your reply. Did you mine? The wired.com article's theory I heard about about 2 years ago when I first started looking in to this peak oil thing. The idea that the earth is bubbling full of oil from the core is a true urban legend.
The simple fact is that there is a standard model that all oil fields, regions, and the world fall in to...it is a bell curve shape. First is discovery, then more and more wells are drilled until drilling more wells in a field no longer increases output. Then the reservoir's output rises until it "peaks" and then goes in to an irreversable production decline.

The US peaked in production in the early 1970's

World discovery of the big oil reserves peaked in the 1960's

The world burns 4 barrels of oil for every new one discovered.

Predicting the "peak" is almost impossible...we won't know until a few years after.

Some analyst's, like Matthew Simmons an investment banker for the energy industry, say that world production peaked in 2000.

We are never going to run out of oil, but what if production starts to decline while demand continues to rise?

These are the facts...now some speculation...

What was Cheney's secret energy task force discussing back in 2001 that he is still fighting all the way to the supreme court to keep a secret?

If the current administration know of "peak oil" what would they do to secure the US with affordable energy?

Why were a plane full of BinLaden's allowed to fly out of the country to Saudi Arabia following 9/11.

I have read your links before. And I have no doubt the federal government is up to its eyeballs in shady dealings.

Let's assume you're correct about oil from the earth being completely finite. What about the other link?
