Guys I'm a noobie to MB, currently borrowing brothers Trek 820 (around 2000 model). I race dirtbikes (harescrambles), so there's obvious similarities to type of terrain I'm going to be riding. Once I'm in a little better shape may concider a few local MB races, but mainly just recreational & excercise oriented probably 1-2 per week use on tight single track trails. I'm 5'11, 185lbs, pretty evenly proportioned.

Delima;
Read some great reviews about the Fantom Comp model $800, but have not seen anything about the Fantom Trail $600, I'd prefer to not spend over $600 but if the Comp is the bike to have and is hands down worth the extra $200 I'd consider spending the extra. Just not sure I need it for my use. From my visit to local bike shops the components on the Fantom Trail bike normally are on much more expensive bikes. I do all my own service on my dirtbikes, so I think I can handle the assembly and tuning of a MB.

What do you guys think? Fantom Trail OK or definatley go with the Fantom Comp (if so why?).

Thanks,

Definitely go with the comp for that price range. The main difference is in the fork. The Tora is air and the Dart is coil and from most reviews I've read the Dart isn't a very good fork. The Tora has adjustable travel verses the Dart's 120mm and the Tora has a remote lockout on the handlebar which is very nifty if you ever race. Other benefit is the hydro brakes on the comp, which require less adjustment than the cable ones (though both work quite well).

That's a lot of upgrade for a mere $200.

I also recommend trying a 29er before you pick your bike as the Fantom Pro 29 is the same price (I have one coming tomorrow myself) and you may find you like the bigger wheels.
