No, I had both my '98 black and raw finish '00 San Andreas's back before I started working for MC. I messed around with my current red '03 San Andreas, using different mounts, a 9.5" rear shock and an '03 Monster T. I highly recommend against anyone trying this since it rode horribly and is not designed for that type of riding anyway.

I said "9.5" rear shock", meaning the rear shock measures nine and a half inches. The rear travel also measured about 9.5" based on the shock's three inch stroke and the 3.1 to 1 leverage ratio.

A bike friend of mine had probably the same setup a few years ago, a Super Monster T with a shock to "match"
He mentionend that it rode silly, and i also rode a few feet on it, you almost had to use a ladder to get on, and the riding is horrible indeed.
He broke his frame during a 10ft drop that same day.

I only had it together like that to see if it was possible, then quickly took it apart. At the same time, I had my 5" Z1 on the front of my 9.5. Now that was a weird set-up.:skep:

The drop isn't what broke that frame. Bolting a 14lb 12" travel fork to a 6lb frame desinged around a 3" to 6" fork is definitely what killed that frame.:nono:

I thought you probably meant what you said, but my brain was having trouble imagining a 9.5" shock mounted in a San Andreas.:shocked:

He had that setup for a few months, I think he had that shock and test fitted it and made one set of shockmounts to get it as far up to the frontseattube as possible.
About the broken frame, it sure was due to the frontfork, he knew that too.

My bike does not like garage ;)

Here's my san andreas. I'm looking for a 1999 to 2002 san andreas main frame.

You need a 2001 or earlier main frame with the VPS front shock mount. The 2002 (and newer) uses a cartridge bearing main pivot and would not work with your swingarm.

No, nothing that high. We had rolling hills no higher than 2500 ft. in the East Bay park system. What is amazing, is the resembalence in the photos, to the open tree less areas of the East Bay Parks.
The color of the grass, dirt on the road and rocks, combined with the way the terrain is laid out, looks like parts of California's foothill areas.

Hey all, great lookin MC's!!

Here is my new Rumble :) Just bought the frame and moved all my old components over from my old ride (Specialized Pro). It's been a few years since I rode, but now am living in Beijing so I thought I'd climb back in the saddle.

After seeing all the great reviews on the Rumble frame I luckily found one at a bike shop near my place.....WOOOT~~!! Since I BMX'd alot when I was a kid, this frame seemed to be just what I needed. I never liked my old Specialized with rear suspension (lousy early rear suspension design) cuz it never felt stable.

Due to a lack of fund'age I couldn't buy some new 130mm single crown forks, but the shop had this used Marzocchi Junior T 03 at a great price. I gathered from reading reviews that 130mm travel is just right for this frame, but my old Rock Shox Indy forks were 80mm, and that just seemed like it would ruin the ride (or my face when endo'ing) so I got the Junior T's.

Anyhow, I was hoping someone could shed some light on the probs I may encounter running this fork. Most of my riding is around the city, but I'd love to hit the mountains on the outskirts to catch some air. The folks at the bike shop are DH nutters, so I'm sure I'll have to join them sometime soon :D Any comments are appreciated :)

Obottu dont worry about the dual crown fork on that frame. I have the same fork on my rumble. Its so much fun to ride. Ill put pictures of mine up later tonight.

The only problems will be when you are doing BMX style riding since you'll have slacker geometry and won't be able to do x-ups. Your bike will be better for riding with the ""DH nutters", since the longer front travel and slacker geometry will help you out. Don't worry about the bigger fork damaging the frame, you'll be fine. I had a huge *' Monster T on my Rumble for a while, no problem,

Cheers fellas, glad to hear the frames integrity isn't being compromised with this fork. I'm taking it out to a local bmx track this week to get some small air.......it's been a while and these guys at the bike shop are pretty persistent on getting me out there, so perhaps the flatter bmx track will be good practice. I hope it doesn't take too long to get used to the weight of the front end ;)

Hi folks, I am new here and glad to find some fellow Mountain cycle owners.
Here is my San Andreas that I have had from new since about '94 or '95. Changed a few things over the years (rear shock, forks) but I love this bike!!

PS Does anyone know how I can fit modern disc brakes onto the old Pro Stop lugs on the rear swing arm?

MMMMM, are they Brembos on the 9.5?

Peak Panther - that's how my San An started out, when the mainframe failed it was replaced with the red front end, then the seat tower went after that and was replaced with the newer style. I'd love another old style "tubular" seat tower though. Touch wood the swingarm is going strong nearly 15 years down the line!
I reckon BETD would make a mount up for you, maybe Twisted could find the CAD drawings for the original Pro-Stop - IS mount?

San Andreas! I am looking for an '06 Manitou Minute, 130mm, QR, with IT adjuster in order to make it perfect!

Thought I'd scan a couple in from back in the day - this would be 93/94.
Original elastomer aftershock - 2.5" (?) of completley undamped goodness. Bought a Risse Genesis (which is still perfect now) pretty soon after I got Buckaroo'd over the bars! that took it to 3" travel. I now run a DT Swiss air shock, 152mm eye to eye which gives 3.75" travel. I tried it with a 165mm shock (giving 4.5" travel) and just didn't get on with it.

Halson Inversion forks, XT/XTR (7 speed thumbies, still on the Cove now!) and Pace rings - 24, 38, 52. And of course a 2.2 Smoke/Dart. I really wish Panaracer would remake the 2.2 Dart. They were a true revelation in steering back then.

Are there any of the original stickers still availabe anywhere?

I'd like to point out that the occasional effect of a crash is not long lasting, normally cured with Gluwein (mulled wine) and much Red Bull and red Vodka (Flugl's)!

Here' my 1999 or 2000 San Andreas (not sure year - pre steer-stopper).

Anyone know what year the San An got the Steer-stopper upgrade? Was it 2001?

I went with pure function on the parts pick as every other dime I have goes into grad school. Soon I'll fit her up with discs and maybe an RP3.

That's an interesting use of a brake noodle on the rear dérailleur.

It's kinda ghetto but it works good for me when using just one front ring. I don't think it's any better than full housing though. The rear derailleur doesn't swing as much around it's main pivot with just one front ring as when you have three. I think it may bind up a bit if it were to swing any more than it does - but I may be wrong.

This is my '05 Sin, I sold my Giant Faith after breaking my wrist downhilling & wanted something less like a battering ram. I haven't done anything much to it yet myself but have big plans; Saint cranks, gold Halo Tornado rims, Fox 36's, X.0 drivetrain.

Hi here's a couple of pics of my fury. i'm currently running a 5th element coil while my rp3 is getting fixed. Have to say the back end is so much plusher with the coil shock. Maybe i should get the fox pushed?

Solutions:

1. The chip way: Buy a second hand Fury, appx 50% from original price
2. More expansive: New Frame + second hand parts, more work to you.
3. More Expansive: New frame + "Spluttering" of chip bike with good parts (like Mongoose Teocali Expert, Saracen, Fuji)
4. Sale season from some shop
5. Be positive – If you wish it will come trough

I sold my kona coiler frame on ebay after i bought this frame on ebay also. got 375.00 gbp for my coiler and paid 250.00 for the fury, bargain!!!! The fury is a much better all round ride and the rear suspension is so much plusher and a lot more supple than the kona. I seen a fury frame recently on ebay that sold for 100.00 and was like new. So if you keep your eyes peeled there are definatley bargains to be had. BIG shout out to Jonny my Irish brethren!!

I've never seen anyone match the new swingarm to the old main frame. Looks like you are running a spacer between the swingarm clamp and the pivot shaft, and continuing with the the bushing pivot.

If I had to do it, I'd machine a plug to fill the big pivot hole in the frame, with a the center drilled and tapped for the 10mm pivot bolts and catridge bearings. Some industrial epoxy should keep the plug in place.

How is your adapter working?

It was a bit more complicated than that :)

The swingarm was actually damaged at the clamps (long and stupid story) so was a throwaway, replaced by a new one and that was on the bike that was stolen. As I could not find a new frame at the time, we decided to do the mate.

Basically the clamps were repaired and then a bush was made and welded into place (by a very good frame repair place). The bushes negate the need for any additional spacers and it all works nicely.

While I liked the bearing arrangement, this was the safest option and I never really had too much of an issue with the shaft on the original.

Yup, its a Girvin design. In fact they made this exact fork (same colors, shock, everything) but instead of saying Noleen on the legs it said Girvin. Much different design that the old crappy Girvin Vector's...the Crosslink ELT was the newest (and last) gen. design. Noleen bought them out somewhere along the way but kept the design. They also made these with carbon legs and the K2 smart shock.

How do you like the X Fusion Air? They look like a nice alternative to the big brands, but I haven't seen much info about them.

The X-Fusion shock is pretty good. Better than I expected. It is like any other air shock really. Not the best for small bumps due to stiction, but very good every where else. I like the fact I can lock it out. They can usually be bought pretty cheap if you find one which makes them a good deal. Both rebound and compression damping are adjusted with one lever, meaning if you increase rebound, you increase compression as well. Simple and works better you would think.I would buy one again if I could. No "stuck down" like a Fox air shock.

The DNA now has Dual Duty rear wheels, x9 shifter / der and both the Sin & DNA have cheesy zoke fenders. The Shockwave will soon have a CCDB as the Romic is currently being serviced and will be set as my back up shock,

I now have some miles on them, a few rides, and work flawlessly (as expected ;) )
The reduced weight is staggering, they are about 2,75 Lbs !! lighter than the wheels it replaced.
They are very nice to see, and strong enough for XC and AM.

The rearhub does make noise, but that is just music to my ears :D :D
If you hate noise from you're rearhub, these are not for you.....

One thing I thought of, but never have tried, is to remove spring, then lay the bike down on a fixed piece of paper, then mark on paper fully extended then fully compressed and measure difference maybe at axle position. Or even trace the axle path as it moves if possible.

This is not very accurate because I had to do it by myself with the bike in a work stand. it was a pain with the damping. But here goes...
It came to 85mm Doh!!!! that includes the 15mm bottomout bumper.
I want to wait until someone else is around and do it again so I can also trace the axle path.

It's strange because it feels like more travel than that...

No, nothing that high. We had rolling hills no higher than 2500 ft. in the East Bay park system. What is amazing, is the resembalence in the photos, to the open tree less areas of the East Bay Parks.
The color of the grass, dirt on the road and rocks, combined with the way the terrain is laid out, looks like parts of California's foothill areas.

The only difference between my XC bike build and DH build is the Cranks & Stem. Makes it easy this way if I need spare parts for one. As much as I would like to build a lightweight XC bike, I hate walking out of the woods even more;)

My original intension was to set the Fury up as a light trail bike and the Bullit as a All Mountain-freeride bike.
"Well" after some trial and error my Fury weighs 33.5 lbs and my Bullit weighs 34.5..:D
I'd rather have a reliable bike than a light bike.
Now who want's to buy a DHX Air..;)

How do you like the seat post? I like mine. It really helps for aggressive riding on bikes without a full seat tube.
Here's a tip if you ever have a problem with it slipping like I did.
You can replace the upper clamp with a size 32.0 Salsa or other quality QR clamp.
Mine hasn't moved since..

Thanks - first San An I saw was a silver (back in 95) and always liked the look - got my silver zaskar in 96 and it was 2003 before I went full suss with the Mountain Cycle. I was a little surprised that there don't seem to be colour options with the Classic reissues - the polished ones look amazing, and if I remember right they took a polished one with the new stickers to last year's Interbike.

Thanks for the seatpost tip - I don't adjust the seat that much, but I've got so many qr clamps that I'll give it a go.

For other makes I have a 05 SC Bullit I got really cheap last year ($275 frame) So I couldn't resist.I also have a Gary Fisher hardtail I bought new in 2001.

Right now the other brand in my stable aside from MC is a Marin Quake. It replaced my defunked Sin and would serve as my FR bike until MC comes out with a worthy replacement that has a stronger /more reliable/bomb proof frame and good geometry.

Just came off the delivery truck yesterday. Brushed aluminum would not have been my first choice but when I saw it in front of me, it looked incredible. This is the medium(long) version of the two sizes. Time to get it dirty:D

The head angle looks quite a bit slacker than my 04 I like it....
Do you have the geometry #'s ?

Same angle as my old '03, but I can't confirm(70 deg.). Headtube length is the still the same at 5.4", Seattube diameter is the same at 34.9mm but now accepts a 27.2 seatpost instead of the old 30.9. Chainstay might be shorter b/c it seems like there is less clearance between the tire and the seattube. Effective TT length may be a tad longer than the '04 medium but i'm not sure of the number...

Brand new Zen, arrived yesterday and built up today...it came with a set of older decals, manual and full color 05 MC product catalog...I wonder if I can get my hands on a set of the new rumble graphics :eekster:

My goal for this project was to build a cheap, fun, all around hardtail to beat on. I wanted solid mid level components at low cost. I planned to make it a 2x9, but it would have required me to change some parts I already had, (BB/tires/FD) so for now it’ll be a 1x9.

I wanted a little different look, so I chose white wheels/bars. The tires are overkill, but with no rear suspension, they’ll help. They’re also lighter for their size at around 900 grams each. Intense lists them as an “all purpose” tire. I guess I’ll see.

Most parts were bought over a period of 3 months, and I managed to find a lot of good deals. I cheaped out on a couple minor pieces, but hopefully that won’t come back to bite me. As usual, it cost more than I thought it would, but the fun is well worth it. This was my third bike build, and I’m into the whole process. Research, Buy, Build, Tweak. especially Build/Tweak. I haven’t set the fork up properly yet, but I’ve been researching it, and I’ll be pulling it apart soon. It isn’t a great fork, but properly tweaked it should be fine for me.

It's a build made to take a beating, and come back for more. Most of the parts aren't super-expensive, just in case something breaks. It's got some old-school stuff on it too. The Kore B-52 stem and Ringle headset to name a couple. These have been with me for years, with no troubles ever. Tell what you think.

Awesome. You polished it. Happy with the results? Did you polish it by hand or use an actual buffer?
I am going to do mine soon. will wait until i have parts to build it, other wise it will sit around and get dusty and go dull.

Yeah, I'm happy with the result. Did it all by hand using 320,400,600,800,100,2500 grade sandpaper ,then Mothers Alu polish. You should go for it on yours. I've got spare swingarm decals if you need them:)

nice! i have a Tremor frame on its way to me,think i may have to get the polish out for that too. how long did the job take? i have polished a GT Zaskar frame but there is not so much frame to polish on that.

Cheers, Yeah, definitely go for polishing I think it looks best. It took about 3 hours a day for two weeks to polish. The main and sub frame are really easy to do, you'll find its the swingarm that takes the time away, loads of little tough to get at nooks & crannies. Also, you may have to reuse your decals or polish around them, MC didn't have any when I asked apart from the swingarm ones, which I think they gave me the last of.

Does anyone know how to clean - remove Mothers polish?
I have a swingarm I need to prep for paint (don't ask :D ) and the polish needs to be removed first.

Pretty build! I think white is by far the Rumble's best color. Your component color scheme ties in nicely. Have you had the frame long? I couldn't find a white Rumble, only red. I posted it last week. My red is green with envy over your white...:p

Hi All,
I've been riding my Zen for a couple of months now. I bought the frame in December or around then as a $350 dollar deal from Adreniline. I was planning to get out for a great year of XC but Wisc Spring weather had other ideas. The spring was almost rained out, really a pathetic start to the season. It's been dry for a while now so I've had a chance to test out the new bike over my favorite trails. My overall impression is that I'm very happy with it. I find the handling predictable and the frame sturdy for the most part. I'd noticed the loose feeling/flexy in the rear that others on here had mentioned. Turned out it was simply that the main pivot was a touch loose - a quick twitch on that cured my gripes completely.
I find the bike is good at most things, I'm still mucking about with suspension settings but it doesn't fail anywhere. It looks thoroughly cool, this bike has great lines. This may be an odd thing to praise but the paint is incredibly durable - best finish of any bike I've owned.

I tend to be patient and thrifty when it comes to parts and buy mid levels components at very low prices. The entire machine has cost me something like $900 bucks so far.
