I'm Kevin. Nice to meet you. What are your weekly trail haunts? I'm wondering if I have seen you out before. Mine are Morning Wood at Booker T. and Chilohowee. I'm at one of those, or both... every week.

Weekends are reserved for big rides in GA, or NC.

In east TN here (Maryville, just a lil south of Knoxville), have had limited (for many reasons) mtbing since moving down here from MI....have made it to I.C. King Park, and Haw Ridge, that's about it....some day, one day, will make it over to NC - gotta get back into "real" shape, first...heh...Perhaps we'll cross paths one day :)

Just wanted to make sure East East Tennessee is represented. I ride Warrior's Path State Park and Buffalo Mountain mainly and Laurel Fork, Roan Mountain State Park and a bunch of cool trails near Erwin less often.

Btw, when I am in Knoxvegas, Haw Ridge rocks. Kudos to all who work to maintain those trails.

Hey guys, I really just getting back into biking around here, I don't know any of the trails around, other than Haw Ridge, but I have never ridden it. Anyone got any suggestions on what trails to ride for a newbie, and what times are the best to go?

If you're new to Haw Ridge there's a couple of easy things to remember that will help you find your way around.

1.) It's a penninsula, you're not going to wind up in middle tn. if you get lost.
2.) the main fire / doubletrack road almost always leads the way out.
3.) If any trails are named in black, that's an advanced trail.

here's a link for a map and more information about haw ridge...

If you've never been, I highly recommend it. Even if you're not in the best shape, it's still good to get out and ride.

I think Haw Ridge is the best place to ride north of the Ocoee area. I sometimes ride Lone Mtn (near Wartburg), Concord Park (in Farragut) or IC King, but I like the variety and choice of trails at Haw Ridge. I would just avoid Haw Ridge after a good rain. It doesn't seem to drain very well. Walden's Ridge used to be a great place to ride (between Oliver Springs and Lake City). It was the best place to ride after a rain because it drained very well. However, it was part of the Cumberland Trail and the state's lease expired years ago so control has gone back to the individuals that own the land (and Coal Creek Mining). Norris is ok, but not my favorite. Technically it is pretty easy, but there are some long climbs. Resist the temptation to go very fast because the equestrian people that use that area are very touchy. The Norris watershed board has threatened to remove bicycle access to the area a few times.

I would encourage you to look at Big South Fork Recreation Area near Oneida....there are a couple of trails there which were designed and built by mtn bikers....they are especially nice for beginning riders....stop at Bandy Creek Visitor Center for free maps of Collier Ridge and West Bandy Creek trail......West Bandy is about to be expanded very soon....

There are longer, more difficult rides if you want them.....if you want to use other trails, the weekdays are much less crowded.

Nice to see some East Tennesseers here. I live in Knoxville, and can't wait to hit Haw Ridge in the Spring. I am getting my bike this Christmas, and have been out of cycling for about 12 years. Just dropping in to say "hey". You can check out my family web page below, if you are so inclined, to learn a bit about me.

I love Knoxville, and can't wait to explore the "unpaved" beauty around here.

Jeremy... Man, the ETRs are everywhere!!!!!!!!! We will do some "Pedal Rides" when I get my Fisher. See ya on the other board.

Asahi, I grew up in Chattanooga, East Ridge to be exact. I used to love to ride Chickamauga Battlefield on dates. What a great leisurely stroll.

I do Harrison Bay regularly because it is close to the house. I skip Booker T. in the summer due to the poison ivy. I ride Edward's Point a lot too. 2 or 3 times a year I go a just a few miles south to ride Pigeon Mountain in north GA.

Knoxville here, though school is in Cookeville right now. I ride Haw Ridge and Concord a lot during the summer, once school starts it's back to driving an hour plus to ride at places like Lock 4, Hamilton Creek, and Fall Creek Falls.
