Hi.

I bought a FS Gary Fisher Sugar 4+ few days ago with the default specs:

Aluminium 6061 frame.
Rear suspension rock shock bar adjust.
Front suspension Manitou Splice Super (70-100mm).
Rear shifters - Shimano LX.
Fron shifters - Shimano Deore.
Front/Rear breaks - Avid.
Bontrager tires both say Jones XR on them 26 inch I think.

What do you guys think of the bike in general? I mainly do XC with a bit of AM. Do you see any "weak" parts in the bike or other parts that I havent mentioned that I should look into ?
I may wanna do some few XR races soons when I get a bit more in shape, do you think its possible with this bike?
Would it be worth upgrading any parts that will be a MAJOR upgrade? (Maybe tires?).

Thanks! :)

My buddy has the same bike and they are sweet. The weakest link though, is the front fork. My Manitou broke last week and his broke today. The lower end Manitou's are pretty weak. Maybe you can talk your bike shop into a trade, since the fork is practically new.

I couldn't get traction with the standard (not tubless) Bontrager Jones XRs, here in phoenix. They are a pretty decent tire and others I ride with use the tubeless version and love them.

I've had four GF Sugars.....broke four of them....each time Uncle Sugar replaced them with a new one. I totally liked the bike for XC racing but it's not up to AM type of riding. I would ditch that fork and buy a Fox or RS. Other then that ride the piss out of it.

Sorry that I sound a bit noobish but how did you manage to "break" them?

Was it just the front fork or the entire frame? How do you even manage to break the frame?

I never broke a frame, fork or any other part in any of my previous rides.

So far as the forks are concerned, the lower end Manitou's are designed poorly and are not made of quality materials. In my case (Axel), the motion caused by the terrain would cause the fork to over heat, freez up and blow a seal. In my friends case (Splice), the fork began making a grinding sound until if became unresponsive. It doesn't take jums or drops to destroy a lower-end fork. Poor design and meterials we do it for you.
