View Full Version : Bend Riding..
Nor Cal* 06-13-2004, 06:01 PM My friend has a house in Bend and we are planning a trip to head up there sometime this summer. What are some good trails in the area, looking for technical downhill trails, jumps, and hopefully some ladders. also does mt. bachelor open for biking? we would love to ride with some locals thats always a lot more fun.

Borneo 06-14-2004, 09:04 AM If you are looking for Northshore stuff, drive farther to Post canyon outside Hood River. Lower Whoops offers some fun BMX style jumping. But...
Bend is all about hauling along in the big ring with a smattering of rocky tech sections.
Just got back from 4 days there(Good meeting you, NAT.) and if you like swoopy trails with some tech sections, it's the place. We hit it right after the rains earlier last week and trails were in perfect shape. Already drying out by the weekend though. I rode almost every piece in Phil's along with lower Storm King, Deschutes up to Benham, and a farewell/Mrazek loop. It's all darn good fun if you take it in the context that it ain't the Shore.
By far, the best loop was a 43 miler we did Saturday. From Phil's, up KGB/ELV/GS/Storm King/(did a loop on Lower Whoops just because you have to ride that if you're up there.)/out Skyliners/Tumalo/up Farewell/down Mrazek/short cut back across 4606 to Phil's and camp. Great, great ride. Later in the year, go up higher. It got amazingly dusty in just 2 days w/o rain. Don't know about Bachelor. No lift served though. But, lots of high country stuff that looks reall, really good.

Aye god that's a big loop. I'm impressed. tberg, Mrs. tberg, and I rode Farewell > Mrazek that sunday, and I was pretty happy with the trail conditions. I'm glad it was clear of snow. It was nice (and serendipitous) meeting you out on the trail like that. Too bad you guys had to rush back to town; I would have liked to ride with you a bit longer. I hope you got your mechanicals fixed.
Borneo 06-15-2004, 04:45 PM Yeah, it is pretty big. But, the elevation gain really isn't that much and once you get out of the burn on Farewell, it's just great climbing. We did have a couple bonkers(11 riders in our group) by the time we got to Shevlin for the spin back. Hauling down that ribbon of joy called Mrazek still sucks the energy out when you're pushing it. Took us 8 hours for the full loop with stopping to play on the log on Skyliner and Mrazek. And, with a break at Tumalo Falls and Lunch at Skyliner.
Totally worth doing the whole loop right now before it get's too dry. I have no clue why the locals go up Mrazek and down Farewell. 3 mile dh or 13? That's easy for me!
It was a good 4 days. Yes, the guys at Hutch's hooked us up and fixed Eric's bike while we waited. They're awesome! We logged 139 singletrack miles. May have to come back for a week next year. Though McKenzie/drive home Sunday was pretty rough after the COTA kegger Saturday night...
But, getting back to the main thread here: don't come for the North Shore stuff. Come to see how fast you can hang on through the sweepers. Awesome country and great trails. Follow the snow line and get out to South and North Fork/Windigo-Metolius.
Nor Cal* 06-15-2004, 09:01 PM that trail sounds really nice and all but i ride a bb7 so its hard to do loops, what goes down must come up. Do you guys know of any trials that can be shuttled? really looking for some awesome DH trails. My friend told me that his house is actually in Sun River, right next to bend, anyone on this board live in Sun Rover we would love to ride with some locals. thanks -kas

Bend is XC heaven, but there's not much DH. You might try this:
