View Full Version : Westwoods in Guilford
freeriderB 06-03-2004, 06:45 AM anyone ride here anymore?
I know it used to be the best XC and tech trails around until the bulldozers cleared the dead forest out a couple years back.
Anyone know if freeriding has made its way into this area?
Thinking or heading up there again to try it out.
Thanks.

There is still good riding there, Some free ride stuff, mostly medium drops, good technical riding, but all the stunts are gone, as far as I know. I ride there once in awhile when I take the Branford white trail to Westwoods, but that ends up to be 30 miles of techincal hard riding so its not very often
Managuense 06-10-2004, 11:00 PM I ride there quite frequently, though it seems that I mostly only see hikers.
As for freeriders, there are plenty of them in there, mostly I see them on weekday evenings (summer 6-830ish).
Managuense 06-10-2004, 11:05 PM Ducman, could you elaborate on the 30 mile ride you have? I'm hard pressed to get a 10 mile loop around westwoods and through the S.C quarry and back.
Thanks.
Ducman 06-11-2004, 05:31 AM The 30 mile loop is the Branford White Trail. It starts at Waverly Park Rd in Branford off of 146. Only problem is there is nowhere to park there. It is easier to start at Youngs Pond on 146 and go west next to the railroad track, follow the white dots. Its a difficult trail to follow. Not well marked, It took me most of the summer to figure it all out. The is alot of technical single track with some road throw in. It connects Branford land trust land by Waverly park to youngs pond to Branford woods to westwood to branford supply pond.
PM me sometime and I can show you the trail
dr.dirt 03-05-2006, 05:27 AM I live around 1/2 mi from west woods and spend a lot of time back there.
There is a lot of technical riding back there and some great drops. It is an immense trail system, you can get maps at trailblazer or at Bishops orchard. You best bet would be to stop by Bully Dog Bikes, they are pretty much a freeride shop (have a lot of gear but thats what they do personally.) They are located near the green accross from the bagel shop.
Be learly of just going in there though. You may get way lost, very easily. Huge sections of it are unrideable and you'll do some hike a bike if you're not careful. After big rain it tends to show you that it is ultimately a swamp in most sections. There is also a fungal blight and many trees are dying and after storms there are quite a few downed trees. Someone has been doing a lot of maintainance (thanks whoever you are) and clears it up in time. The best time to ride I've founf to be when it is really cold and dry. All the swamp is frozen over and the vegetation is under control.
The white trail in my opinion is a pos. just a lame experience hacking through thornbushes.
West woods does have perhaps the best trailrunning I have ever done in my life. Maybe something for a different forum.
9.8m/s/s 03-05-2006, 10:23 AM Some fun stuff, but like others have said, find a guide. Lots of technical rock riding if you do find it. Otherwise expect lots of hike a bike and swamp.
Bad idea right after a rain. Mosquito's of death. You may survive, but the blood loss will be staggering.
Check out the clips in the trail area of Bikerag.com, should tell ya most of what you need to know.
Blue Sugar 03-15-2006, 07:19 AM I've been riding there for fourteen or fifteen years. The riding is still pretty good, but it's a shadow of what it once was.

How long is your normal loop?If you can checkout www.crankfire.com and let me know if this loop is what you do.
Blue Sugar 03-16-2006, 07:26 AM Start at Sam Hill Rd and head out to Moose Hill Rd (about a thousand ways to do that, as you probably know), and then to the quarry. Cross the quarry road (there is a trail, but it's kind of hiden). That will take you to a paved road. Take a right. It will become a dirt road and will take you to a point you should recognize from the ride out. Then ride back. That's a good eighteen to twenty mile ride. I've heard that you can get even farther west, to Leete's Island Road and beyond, but I've never done it.
