Volunteers are needed to build two miles of new trail in the west Boise Foothills, but you need to register to help by Wednesday.
REI, Southwest Idaho Mountain Bike Association and Ada County Parks and Waterways are teaming up with volunteers at 9 a.m. June 5 to build the trails on county property east of Seamans Gulch Road.
Volunteers need to register at REI by calling 322-1141 by Wednesday. All volunteers who register will receive lunch, a T-shirt, and entry into prize drawings after the project.
Volunteers will meet at Optimist Park on Hill Road about a half-mile west of the Seamans Gulch turnoff, where they will be shuttled to the work site. They need to bring gloves, boots, water, hat and sunscreen. The work will be done rain or shine. It is expected to last until 4 p.m.
Coordinators are hoping to have 150 volunteers and ask that they register so there will be enough tools, T-shirts and food available.
"We can have a much better project if we get a good, solid head count," REI store manager Tom Chelstrom said. He encouraged kids and youth groups to help.
"We need people under age 18 to come with parents or an adult leader who will work throughout the day," he said.
This will be the first new Ridge to Rivers trail built by volunteers since the Red Cliffs trail was constructed in 1998 near 8th Street, said Tim Breuer, open space coordinator for Ada County Parks and Waterways.
The Seamans Gulch trail will be a stand-alone trail and not an extension of an existing trail network.
"This one is unique in the amount of miles of new, never-before-seen singletrack," Breuer said.
The trails are designed for hikers and beginner mountain bikers. The trails will cut through rolling terrain without many steep sections and will be built wide enough for inexperienced riders.
"This is will really be a great trail for families," Chelstrom said.
