Cool beans. I think the regional fora are a good idea. Wondering why there isn't also a Maryland board, though, what with Patapsco, Schaeffer Farm, etc. and so on...

Hmm, yeah you're right. Maybe this should be a DC Area board instead. I thought maybe Mid-Atlantic at first but New Jersey has their own board, if NJ is even considered Mid-Atlantic.

That would make sense to me, or putting Md and NoVA in with the Mid-Atlantic. OTOH, I can understand the use of caution when creating the regions. Nobody wants 8 zillion separate fora for each and every little patch of dirt in the world. Anyway, Maryland is sorely missing.

OK, I'll stop now before I totally hijack this here VA thread... ;)

Hey VA. This cold weather has got to go. I rode last Saturday and had to stop short, bike and me were a one big ice cube.

If any one is interested I'm looking for riding partners for couple of nite rides a week, and on the weekend.

Agreed, I really like ridemonkey.com format...VA and surrounding area. It makes for a single regional board to check. A single MD, DC, VA, PA, WV board is much easier to keep track of.

Hey Chubbs,

MORE has weekly night rides - monday, Tuesday and Thursday http://www.more-mtb.org. I usually go on the Tues. one even though its slower than my normal pace b/c I can't keep up with the faster riders on Monday and Thursday. Where do you usually ride?

I kind of like the cold weather, except for the constant runny noses. The ground is nice and frozen and I don't come home full of mud. :) Plus, I feel more protected with all that extra clothing :)

Cheers,
Kristina

I got more serious about riding last fall and mostly stuck to trails around Leesburg and Ashburn, and riding the WO&D. Thanks for the MORE site, I had seen that but couldnt remember the link. Working in Fairfax it would be close to join a couple of them.

I love the cold weather but froze myself and my bike last Saturday, so the ride got cut real short. Going to ride again this Sat. and Sunday (hopefully).

I did not see many people go by last night... just harrassing cause I'm too much of a wimp to ride tonight... I usually ride in the mornings but its fun to see all the lights go by at night. During the summer it happens all night, there are no breaks between the night riders and folks that get up before work. Its quite motivating over a cup of coffee.

No if I can get that dang bus driver not to shine her lights into my bedroom window at 5am...

Chubbs, I'll be out there Sat & Sun depending on weather if you want to ride.

LOL! That's too funny! I wonder who what was riding in the snow. It looks like its not going to be above freezing on Sat. so it might be too sloppy although, its got to be awfully slick with the ice under the snow.

Nova,

Where are you riding? I went out for a quick one last nite and the trails were very very slick out my way. Weather is going to be coooooold it looks like, and not much melting.

Wow, your pretty brave riding at night in this ice. I was thinking of staying close to home tomorrow, either Accotink or Wakefield or both. That way the hot chocolate, tea, soup, and a place to get warm up is near by. It looks like a couple of us are going to ride before the game on Sunday, those plans should finalize tonight or tomorrow as everyone gets a riding pass from their wives/children.

Is that seriously a pic of someone riding? Honestly, I would have never guessed that...ever.

I know there was a ride last night, I showed up a little late and caught up with about 5 guys. First they rode the Wakefield side, I think the Creek Trail. Then a few of them headed straight over to the Accotink side via the Cinder Trail. Not sure if that's who you saw, but there would have been more than just one of them if it was the MORE peeps.

I'm training for an off-road triathlon, so for the first time ever, I skipped riding last night and used a free pass at the Rec Center and ran on the treadmill and then went swimming...but I really really wanted to ride, nothing like a deep snow ride on virgin trails to really make you work. Chubbs, you ride that stuff and I bet you will be sweating so much there is no way you can get cold, ha.

More dumb than brave I think. This whole weekend will be hard for me now, and with the cold might just skip it all together. At the most maybe get a hike in at GF, conditions permitting.

Not to complicate are the board surfing you guys & gals do, but I have a site for Va also.

In the past 3 mos we have got grown to about 64 members, and we have about 25% of them posting on a daily basis.

Most members are spanning from RD, NC. to Roanoke, H'burg, VaBeach to NOVA. and many places in between.

One of the members is actually trying to start a MORE chapter down here in Richmond as well.

We are getting ready to post some bigger rides for upcoming months, as well as local rides are posted daily.

Feel free to stop in and check it out.

Some great info. and the more people the better.
If you are a member of RM you might already know a few members on my site also.

Thanks for looking, and happy riding!

Yesterday was a bit of a rush. Once we got back from the swap meet with all of our scores and properly goofed around with the new bike we bundled up (3 of us) and went for a ride at Accotink. All of us just grabbed our rigs with no special winter modifications. Right of the bat we ran into a group of 4 on all C-dales, mostly big travel bikes and they were heading over to Wakefield. No one in that group was running spikes either.

What a workout. Most climbs were not make able in the deep snow with the fun crusty layer of ice over top. My weapon of choice was a lightweight hardtail set up as my racing bike, but it does have a 121 rear rim for extra durability and power transfer. The V brakes were not a wise decision for this ride, and all downhills were exhilarating at full speed. Well at least as fast as the snow would allow.

After tooling around a bit, getting stuck, we decided to hit the main trail around the lake. This was surprisingly technical with all the ice and ice ruts from the park vehicle and runners. We had lots of fun getting up to speed in the ice groove and then changing lines into the deeper footprints that were iced over. Lots of screwing around. I went down twice, though the first one hurt it was laughable. A true mid-speed hop onto ice and changing direction. The rear wheel slid out and the bike was quickly airborne as I was thrusted down onto the ice. With all the extra layers this was not that bad.

The second will have me limping for a bit as we were racing around the lake on the hillier side(term is used loosely). Anyway, I flew into an ice patch and got crossed up. Sprained my right knee, sliced my left ankle on the pedal, and got a nice bruise on my left hand. The ice stairs were a bugger to climb out of and at this point my bike served better as a tripod than a climbing machine.

We had just enough time to put the bikes away and shower up before everyone showed up for the super bowl/commercial watching party. What a day.

Well I don't think that I have any trouble finding ice for my aches today ;)

And to add insult to injury the brown santa just dropped off a shipment of tires, including spikes.

Ouch!! I hope your knee heals up quickly! Especially since you got some new tires. Sounds like you had fun! With the bad weather on its way, you'll probably even have an easier time finding ice ;)
