Just curious if you guys may know what I'm talking about here... there seems to be a section of the Freeway trail (Boise foothills) where it goes uphill (if you're headed N towards Hulls Gulch) but it feels like you're going downhill (momentum etc.) Am I just imagining things? Any explanation as to how this uphill portion feels like it's downhill?

I have not noticed that, but next time I ride it I will look for it. Once you get by the sidewinder turnoff it seems just slightly rolling to the top and you can just cruise along.

It is amazing how much that trail seems like a freeway on certain days when other trails are empty. On busy days when I ride from my house and part way up freeway and then turn right at the top of the long climb to go to military reserve/rocky canyon the crowds seem to evaporate and the trails are empty.

On the section from the bottom of sidewinder to the bottom of #4, it feels about the same to me whether I am riding up or down. I am usually in one of my top two gears either way. It must be fairly close to level.

I rid the southeast foothills alot, Squaw Creek, Highland Valley, Cobb Trail, Shaw Mtn road, etc, and it is always like that. It is a suprise to encounter more than a couple of people on a ride, if anybody.

Yep, that's the part I'm talking about. If you stop at the sidewinder turnoff (south entrance) and look over to the other side of the hill, it appears to be going uphill, but when you ride it it feels more downhill'ish as you have lots of momentum pushing you along. Crazy!

I've also noticed that there are some quiet trails in the foothills despite the high traffic on freeway. I suppose kestrel-freeway-sidewinder-hulls gulch is a common trail because it's relatively short, and a nice after-work ride. I've been on say corrals-scotts, or shanes-curlew-devils' slide, and there's NOBODY out there. But those take me a few hours to do. I'm still a newb.

Linkbeat,
I was talking about that to a buddy the other day during a road training ride I think going up Bogus Basin Road. Sometimes when you've been climbing for a while and the ascent levels a bit but is still going up, it feels like you're going downhill or just gets a lot easier. As for a section of trail feeling like a bit of descent both ways, I dunno!

I get that when going through the little rollers right above where Red Cliffs drops off of it.
I think it's a momentum type thing. It could be just less of an up and easyer to pedal in places. I ride a 51 LBS free-ride bike so everything is hard to pedal for me.
