I want to convert my Trek 930, yr 99 from a 8 spd to a 9 spd. Currently it has the Shimano LX shifter, derailers, and LX Delore cranks and rings. I know the rear cassette, chain, and shifter needs to be replaced. Can I still use the LX Delor cranks and rings?

I purchased a 98 trek 930 a couple of months ago (thought it was a '99, but when the person showed up with it, it turned out to be a '98). Still a good bike, but where the '99 has a Shimano LX drive chain (except the frt der.) and trigger shifters, the '98 has SRAM 7.0 drive chain (except the frt der.), Sugino cranks and grip shifters--the SRAM is supposed to be comparable to the LX group but I am not sure about that. There were a couple of other minor updates between the '98 & '99. Anyway, but I digress.

I took my bike to the LBS to be checked out. While they have some more life in them, the LBS indicated that I will need to replace the cassette & rear der. in the not too distant future. I asked about going with a 9-spd shifter/cassette/der. & was told that I could use the same set of cranks & rings. That will be another upgrade ;-)

Good luck with it.

yes. actually you can keep using your front and rear derailleurs as well (assuming they are designed for 8 speed). the only things you need to switch out are shifters, cassette and chain. a sram chain is a bit better at this kind of 8/9 speed mix&match because they are a bit wider than shimano 9 speed chains.

930 is a great frame. enjoy.

Interesting. I gather from your comment that the der. has no impact on the # of gears--its all about how much the shifter moves the der., and the width of the chain/gears.

Thanks for the feedback on the 930. Not sure how much it weighs, but it seems lighter than most other steel bikes I have picked up.

The derailleur has basicly the same, besides a small change in the cage width and it will work just fine. Check out this short article from Mountain Bike Magazine regarding drivetrain compatibility.

On my '96 Scott winterbike I'm running '96 XT 8-speed derailleurs (front/rear) with XTR 9-speed STI grips, XT 9-speed cassette and SRAM PC-99 chain. I'm still using the old Sugino 8-speed chain rings and it's running problem free...

Enjoy!

I agree with all below, but I would really be sure the chainrings are not heavily worn. If they are, matching it up to a new chain and cassette would be sure to cause accelerated wear. It might be cheaper in the long run to just start with a completely new drivetrain. There are some good low prices out there on items like Shimano LX 9 spd cranksets. Check out comparisonpricing.com for good deals.
