My '04 Fly had no problems taking the 8" disc brake adapter. There is no special hayes floating brake arm that I am aware of. I used the the international standard adapter with no problems.

You must explain what type of riding you do in order for us to give you an ignorant decision. Fyi the fly bc of the curnutt pedals like a fvking dream

ok. i ride the shore. i do some drops but not the huge ones. i ride up the trails so i need to pedal up. i also do whistler. right now i'm riding a 6" bullit w/ a boxxer up front. i noticed that the fly's got amazing reviews but it's also a lot more $$$ than the VP-Free. pedalling, wouldn't the VP-free pedal better? what about when bike is pointed down?

the fly is a really sweet bike. on the way up, if you have curnutt and two rings up front, it will get you to your destination in relative comfort. i use mine for all my riding now, trail riding and lift assist. my 30 lb trail bike doesn't see any action anymore. the fly is basically a full bore dh race bike that pedals well and can run a front derailer. and on the way down, uh yeah, it's good. if you can afford it, get a fly w/ curnutt. i can't imagine you'd be disappointed with it. i've never ridden a vpfree, i'm sure it ain't no slouch, and fully built up, it's probably not exactly dirt cheap either.

Yeah, there is actually an 8" specific part of the floating brake you'll need from Foes (or a Foes dealer as they don't sell direct) in order to run the 8 incher on your Fly with the floating brake assembly.
