Guys,

Just wondering what you guys run on in terms of pedal/shoe combinations? I'm relatively new to AM, switching from a basic hard tail to a decent full susser for more aggressive terrain/riding and I'm wondering should I go clipless and if so what's the best combinations.

I'd appreciate your time and thoughts!!

Stuart.

I just got back into biking and I am using the Specialized taho shoe because its a comfortable fit for a big foot. I am using Candy C sl pedals.

I've been sticking to 661 shoes. For the past two years, I've used their Launch shoe. Recently (and I mean I've only had them for a couple of weeks), I've been using their Tiburon 3 shoe. I like them because they fit, their cheap and they have decent soles for walking.

I've been using CB Mallets for two years now on my AM bike. I could care less that I can clip out and just use the platform when doing something techy. Mainly, I like the extra support of the platform. They do weigh a hell of a lot, though. Still, when your bike weighs 35 pounds, who cares about an extra half pound?

I wear Sidi Dominator 4's (which I love) w/Candy pedals. The crankbros pedals are easy to eject out of in crashes but I do notice that the cleats tend to wear very fast. They are a nice simple pedal though.

Sure hope they last better than my SHimano's I have. I have the SHIMANO SH-M038 (sole looks the same as yours) and they haven't even lasted me 2 years. Sole's have totally come of the shoe and I've had to put them back on w/ 5 min epoxy several times and I only have around 4,700 miles on them. They have seen a load of wet, muddy rides so maybe that's contributed and I guess for the price you pay you really shouldn't ask for more.

Anyway I'm gona be going w/ some SIDI Dominator 5's along w/ my Shimano M520's - inexpensive pedal and works excellent. Hope the SIDIs last longer.

personally,

I prefer to use pedals AND shoes.

but some of you "radical extreme mild freeriding All Mountain" guys might feel differently.

don't forget, when you get the "All Mountain" bike you have to pretend like you're a "freerider" and get all gussied up with armor, full face, flat pedals, sticky shoes.

and then ride your tame dirt sidewalk XC trails to show off your new "All Mountain" rider persona.

don't mind the experienced riders who laugh and call you "gomer" or "poseur".

they're just jealous.

After reading about some pedal failures on MTBR I thought I'd better grease up mine, lol! I have a small grease gun with a tapered tip. The Crank Bros pedals come with a grease fitting that screws into outside of pedals so you can squirt grease through the pedal until it begins coming out of inside bushing.

For most "all mountain purposes" I think some nice clipless pedals/shoes are the way to go because after all, "all mountain" riders are ride everything from xc to really tech. Clipless pedals are deffinately better for spinning on the xc stuff.

At least for me, they also allow me to go faster on the dh sections as well by helping keep my feet connected. Seems like you can milk the most dh potential out of your shorter travel bikes w/clipless pedals because of their ability to keep you from being jerked off your pedals at speed.

Any of you guys have wide feet? And if so, what shoes do you like (besides Sidi Dominator Megas, I won't spend that much on a shoe)?

I've been riding Wellgo flats while wearing Vans the last few years because I couldn't find a comfortable clipless-compatible shoe. I don't really like the flats though. Before that I had Time pedals and Cannondale Flexoshoes.

I'm planning to switch back to clips sometime this year... as such, I have a pair of Mallet Cs that are not installed yet.

I'm a 12 extra wide or 13 (US sizes) and have no problems finding shoes. The again, I'm not that uptight about the brand (which is why I'm using LG's right now) as long as it fits the feet.

Just check out what's available at the LBS and go from there.

The last LBS that I would give my money to around here shut down a few years back. Makes it a lot harder to try anything on.

I couldn't care less about the brand. So far, everything I tried at Performance was too narrow, but they only had Performance brand and Shimano road shoes.

Actually, LGs were on my list of shoes to try already. I'll see if I can track some down on a closeout somewhere. Thanks!

For shoes I use answer XC1s, because they are what I could afford.
Pedals are Crank Brothers Candy Cs. So far seems to be a good combo. The brass cleats seem to be wearing a little quicker than I would like. Which is so far not affecting performance, but will in the not to distant future.

Pearl Izumi Groove shoes and Mallet C pedals. The Grooves are a more "recreational" clipless shoe but they're my frist clipless shoes ever. They're comfortable and easy to walk around in because they are almost like a regular sneaker. now that ive gone clipless i really like it.

And the mallets are great,i love having the platform for when i just wanna ride around. I even taught my girlfriend to ride a bike on them like a week ago. now she wants to ride all the time.

The Bullets are quite a bit cheaper than the Dominators, but do not come in the "narrow" & "mega wide" like you'll find the Dominators easily available in. Actually only seen a 42 in the MEGA size. Check out Chain ReactionCycle for some decent prices ion SIDIs and other stuff.

Shoes - Adidas Hematomas. They are marketed as downhill shoes but they are very lightweight and are SPD compatible. Very comfy too even for XC type rides. Just buy a size bigger then you normally wear cuz they run small.

Pedals - I use the Time Z clipless pedals that have the platforms but no spikes. I usually ride clipped in but I like to unclip for the really sketchy sections.

This is my favorite shoe/pedal combo yet.

Shimano SH-M058 and PD-M424's... that combo is tough as nails. The shoes look still like new except for some rubber ripped near the cleats and the pedals are all bashed, but still going strong.

Pedals are two years old and the shoes were bought in 2002. Paid around 80 bucks for the shoes and the pedals came with a bike I bought used... but once I bought a pair for like 50 bucks.

Tough little pair. I hate the pedals on the sticky mud, though. Other than that, years come and go and they're holding up great. they're maybe on the second pair of cleats if that matters.

Several shoes, but the pedals are always the same, Shimano PD-M424. They are the same as the PD-M647, but lighter, with a less strong resin cage. But they are lighter and super cheap. I bust perhaps one pair per annum (?) - low BB will do that for ya!

Shoes, mainly Shimano Carbon soled race shoes (several pairs) or Sidi Dominators.

What I would like however, is a race-shoe style that was also stiff, with an all rubber sole that would grip on a platform pedal when you miss your cleat. But no-one makes a really good one of these.

(I also have one pair of super cheap, recreational level Shimano shoes with laces and an all rubber sole - which I use when I am only riding downhill or going jumping. Miss a cleat, and the nice rubber soles and the pedal platform still give excelent grip, but the soles are horrible and flexy for all day riding.)

Sidi Doms 5 and Egg Beater SLs. (Used to use Mallet Cs, but the platform never justified the weight... and they weigh a lot!)

Not quite the I'm-super-cool-all-mountaineer-with-platforms-and-skate-shoes, but they work perfectly for me.

And, like El Jefe said... I wish Sidi made dress shoes. Hands down, THE most comfortable shoe I own.

Cheers!

SIDIs and Mallet Ms. SIDI shoes are pretty tough. They look like sh!t now, but are structurally still good.

I might prefer the Time Z platform pedals to the Mallets, actually, but I have crank brothers on all my bikes so I don't want to swap out all of my pedals.

Spesh Trail 120 SL + CB Mallet Ms

Expensive shoes, but very comfy, light, grippy sole and added ankle protection. Also prefer simple velcro straps to ratchets. It's the perfect all-round shoe for me. The cheaper Trail 110 looks a good bet if you can't face the cost.

Mallets are ace providing you re-grease them regularly. They're also very light for a full platform. Tried the Candys too, but found the platform too small to be of much use.
