View Full Version : Welcome to the New All Mountain Forum!
gregg 04-21-2006, 12:06 PM This forum was created since it doesn't quite fit, to discuss All Mtn/Trail Bikes in the DH/FR forum. These are bikes, brands, parts related to bicycles that are more than a lightweight XC ride, but not made for hardcore hucking and jibbing.
Thanks for using this forum.

FastMovingTarget 04-21-2006, 12:58 PM I'm sure others will disagree, but, IMO, this forum is needed. Well done.
One thing I do not understand is why there is no HARO forum. You have Ibex, Iron Horse, Jamis but not Haro? Come on. I think Haro is right up there with Spec., Cannondale, Giant, Intense, Rocky Mtn., Santa Cruz, ... when it comes to mtn bikes. Haro and Eric Carter not too long ago claimed a world's title. There are quite a few haro owners out there and I often see Haro mentioned in the "what bike to buy" forum. Seems silly to me.

LOL! Fast, I think you might find quite a few of us will gravitate over here to participate. In reality this might be the biggest group of rider type or category existing. And by that I don't mean that a DH guy or an XC racing guy only does one venue of riding or only has one bike to do it on. I'll bet more of us who ride off road do the "AM" thing as much or more than the other types of riding that we like. I agree, this was a good idea.
BTW, I have a Haro too...'04 Werks EX.
giantbikeboy 04-21-2006, 03:25 PM Thanks Gregg. I actually fit somewhere now! GBB:D
Zen_Turtle 04-21-2006, 04:26 PM Much definitely needed forum. Thanks man!
All Right, I think that I kinda fit in here or I would like to :) I have the ride for it. Definitely think it's a goodforum to add.
BTW would anyone like to give a explanation about what AM is to us not so in the know - What makes AM not FR and not Aggressive XC?
I don't have a fancy 5"+ bike, but I do feel Trance would work quite well doing what I consider AM type riding. I think I do XC/Aggressive XC/ slight AM type riding.
Stevirey 04-21-2006, 05:33 PM Good job! It's about time.

Yes, this is the forum I've been waiting for!
My first question: What's the best all-mountain bike?
Kidding, of course. (Although I see some others have actually asked that question.)
I propose the default response to that question is: the Maverick ML7/5 or ML8. In honor of the forum sponsor, Maverick American. (BTW, aren't they made in Taiwan now? )

Ray Dolor 04-21-2006, 11:21 PM .........This forum will be a hit!
So, isn't "All Mountain" what we used to just call "Mountain Biking" back in the day, before there were so many sub-catagories?

This is just what I was thinking.
mzungo 04-22-2006, 04:50 PM Hi Iam from the South west of England ....so could we say All Hill!! we aint got to many mountains, but i do like to go over through or sometimes under everything I can.

SuperKat 04-22-2006, 05:41 PM Thank you.
bottom feeder 04-22-2006, 05:50 PM Living here in new england I've always thought most of the trails would be considered AM.But to me its just mbking. I just needed a ride that was more suited to the region. Really happy with it so far and looking forward to putting many enjoyable miles on it.

I think there are a lot of Haro owners on this site that don't bother to mention it (what's the point?). Ditto for Marin. We need a Marin forum. Oh well.
So, nice bike. 2004 was the best year design-wise for Haro. They had the best component specs. in 04. Haro should've keep the XLS and then added the other lines (Shift, Extreme, etc). Without a 80-100mm travel FS bike there is a void. Now, they go from a Werks hardtail to a werks 5 inch trail bike. That's a weird void from such a large manufacturer.
Earlydemise 04-22-2006, 08:27 PM uh...so is this a trail riderz category because I've noticed there isn't really one so if it is then that is awesome?
upontwo 04-23-2006, 01:37 PM This is how in define "All-Mountain". Whatever obstacle or terrain feature you come across in the trail, you ride over, under, on top of ,etc. The only thing that holds you back is the lack of skills, courage, or your bikes ability to take the abuse your dishing out.
It's a little of everything. A little XC, FR, DH, trials, etc.
This should be a nice forum!
Thanx,
Rob
So are you saying that in other catagories (XC, DH), they'll get off and walk sometimes, even though they and their bikes are capable of riding it?

Yeah, I do see what your saying, it's all pretty much the same. It's MOUNTAIN BIKING.
We all walk the sections or obstacles, etc. that we prefer not to take on at that particular moment. The bikes do help in what genre we choose to ride.

I wouldnt mind a KHS forum!

All Mountain, All Condition, All Hill, or even Extreme XC sounds about the same to me, or just plain Mountain Biking like mentioned above. If you feel like hucking a drop along the trail, jumping a creek instead of riding across, hitting a difficult technical section instead of riding around it, trying to ride a log across a creek, or dropping the seat a bit and hitting that fast downhill section of your favorite trail. That is "All Mountain Biking" to me.
Oh, I ride a Giant AC for my All Condition riding.
ebfreerider510 04-25-2006, 09:41 PM im gonna miss all the homies from the DH/FR forum, don't be strangers guys....if i get a third bike to my collection soon it will be a trail bike though:cool:
KONA_in_SB 04-26-2006, 10:52 AM So are you saying that in other catagories (XC, DH), they'll get off and walk sometimes, even though they and their bikes are capable of riding it?
I would so that is true. You don't see very many DH guys riding a to the top of the trail on their 8-10" bikes. They usually shuttle or take lifts.
I have seen plenty of people walk steep section on the XC hardtails that I can fly through on my DH bike.
But on an all-mountian type ride you would ride to the top of the trail (probably slower then on an XC bike) and the bomb down the trail (faster then on a XC bike but probably slower than a DH bike).
To most I think this is just called "mountain biking". I don't think that this is the same type of mountain biking that was done 5/10/15 years ago though because the we now have way better bikes. So people with average skill (myself included) can now easily ride what was consdiered gnarly or "extreme" a few years back.
My all mountain ride is a Kona Coiler, six inches front and rear. I used to call it my XC bike until I got a hardtail (now I call that my XC bike), now I call my Coiler my 'trail bike'. Sometime I ride with some XC/roadie guys and they consider my Coiler a DH bike and sometimes I ride with my DH buddies and there is no way my Coiler compares to their bikes. So to them it is not a DH bike. Also I have raced the Coiler in both DH races and XC races.
The point I am trying to make is that the "all-mountain" category means different things to different people. I don't think we need to spend a whole lot of time trying to nail down what it is. Its really not that important. But if you insist on having a definition it might be easier to say what it is not. I'll start:
You are probably NOT "all-mountain" riding if.....
you used a lift to get to the top of the trail.
you think your 8" travel bike "climbs well".
your protective gear makes you look like a Storm Trooper.
you consider a 20 min run a "long trail".
your non-riding buddies think your bike looks like a motorcycle w/o the motor.
you think 10 ft drops are small.
you think air shocks are weak.
you think a 3" travel hardtail is "enough bike".
you drilled holes in your rims to make them lighter.
you have carbon fiber water bottle holders.
you shaved your legs for the ride.
you drink Cytomax after the ride instead of beer.
you think 2 foot drops are huge.
you think coil shocks are to heavy.
Did I miss anything?

I think this is a perfect summary.
A great new forum and just what some of the other boards needed to get some of the clutter off of them.
Looking forward to this new board.
