View Full Version : Bottomed out shocks

I'm too damn big to be doing a lot of hardcore biking, but . . .

I made a small drop yesterday (about 1.5 feet) and, when all 270# of me introduced itself to my RockShox Jett's, I compressed them all the way. Top met bottom with a pretty loud "clank," and, as best I could discern, still worked afterwards.

I know I'll wear the coils out eventually and, since I'm just a funrider and not a competetor, this doesn't concern me right now.

Aside from loosing a few lb's and picking my terrain more wisely, is there anything else I can do to prolong my shock life?

Thanks.

If its a coil shock try a heavier spring, at 270 you sould be riding a heavy spring (800lbs+), Coils do sag more over time, good luck!

Are you running the largest and stiffest coil that the RockShox Jett can accomodate? I am not sure if this is an option for this shock, but your choices will be limited if you cannot swap out that coil. Ask your LBS or local RockShox dealer to verify it. At 270lbs, the next landing you bottom out could take the frame. Goodluck

Yeah, get the heaviest spring.

First of all get rid of that fork! Guys our size should be using 5 inch travel forks minimum. If cash is an issue, pick yourself up a used marzochii Z-1. Anything from 2001 and newer, and get the X-tra heavy spring set for it. Those forks are bomb proof. I've got an 01 on my 2004 Heckler. I rarely bottom it, and I go off 4 and 5 foot drops!

That makes them usless for a clyde like us. Get at least a 4" fork, 5 is better, if your frame is ok with that.
