View Full Version : Saddle advice please?
Barley 04-03-2004, 07:38 AM I'm not actually a Clydesdale (yet) - I weigh about 185lbs. I'm trying to decide on a new saddle and was wondering what others, my weight and heavier, are using. Most all of my past saddles have been Selle Italia's. My most recent was a SLR with Ti rails - which I loved, but got only one season out of it before cracking a rail - super low weight (140g) and comfortable. I have been able to recycle it onto my road bike without a problem.
I race a bit, so I want a light'ish seat. I've been kicking around the idea of getting another SLR, but don't like the idea of chucking $140 Cdn for one season of riding on it. The Titec Ithy's Gove weighs in at about
210 g - good reviews, but still Ti rails. Will I break them as easily?
Got any suggestions for a light'ish, reliable, and comfortable saddle?
Cheers.
jason74 04-04-2004, 09:44 PM I'm also still looking for a comfy/ longer lasting seat. I would say stay away from the specialized body geometry seats. I've found them to be very uncomfortable.
AZClydesdale 04-04-2004, 11:03 PM ...but I really like my Azonic Love Seat. I've thrown several Specialized and WTB saddles back on my steed from time to time, but I always return to the Azonic Love Seat. Since the last '24 hrs to Old Pueblo' event in Tucson when my arse was killing me, it hasn't come off since. Definately not for everyone, but I affectionately refer to it as my "Love Sofa".

mtnbiker62 04-05-2004, 08:48 AM These probably won't work for you, because you are looking for a light saddle. But I have found both the WTB Laser and Speed Comps to be comfortable. The Laser is a little wider than the Speed, so I ride it on the fully and the Speed on the hardtail. Both have been very comfortable for me.
Rocket V Stealth works for me.
Should be pretty much light enough for anyone.
BigDigger 04-06-2004, 01:27 AM WTB Speed V has proven really comfortable to me. You can get them with Ti rails.
cherrybomber 04-06-2004, 02:59 AM wtb is all good :) used to ride the specialized body geometry stuff but they leave bruises on my inner thigh when i have them clamped in a death grip during wicked downhilling.
i love the love seat too! problem is i find it too wide for daily use... ( i should just keep trying to use it.) and its too damn comfy :D !
you tend to sit in it when you should be standing and distributing your weight...
hmmm maybe i should take the leather couch out of my room and just sit on the love seat on a really long seatpost bolted to the floor.......
The Selle Italia Max Flite Trans Am is a great saddle. I'm about 190 and I've got one on each of my bikes. It's relatively light and the most comfortable saddle "out of the box" I've run into. Everybody's a$$ is different so it may not be for you but it works for me. You can find it for around $50 online.

How long have you been riding this saddle? Some feel it to be too narrow - what do you think?
EBasil 04-08-2004, 10:34 AM I have a lot of miles and time on the WTB SST-K .98 ti rail. It's light, strong enough to support 235lb on a hardtail, including when I've been tired enough to sit through washboard sections. It has the classic, curved and padded WTB nose, a soft section under your nads (no groove or cutout, though) and a decently wide seat area.
Greenfish Sports and Cambria are both clearing out the extremely similar SST-K .2000 ti rail saddle, and I just picked one up from Greenfish for $30 to put on my new bike. The sale versions are blems that will fade over time because of a bad dye lot. They don't mark your clothes, but fade to black/brown whereas my old .98 is still all black on the leather.

I've used the Rocket V stealth Ti for a few months now and I like it pretty well. I have a cheaper heavier WTB on my SS bike and it's OK too.
nermol 04-09-2004, 02:49 PM I just love my rocket V race, the Speed V was to wide for tastes. Just for comparisions of taste I also run a SLR on my road bike.
Brown_Teeth 04-09-2004, 04:40 PM Depends on your arse so try a few, but get one with a groove unless you want to save on rubbers.
RYNOFREERIDE 04-09-2004, 05:20 PM My brother and I like the WTB selections with the comfort zones, problem was we kept breaking the models with Ti rails. Got the cheaper model with chromo rails and both of us have had no problems and are happy. I won't buy a saddle with Ti rails ever again. I'm sure they are fine for standard riders, but I am a clyde!
wickerman1 04-11-2004, 08:27 PM Here's what i ride and im 250 ish.
its not as light as the Ti one, but this one has cromo rails and its quite light and comfortable and only 40 bucks CAD
Stinky Wiz 04-12-2004, 09:14 AM I've tried a lot of saddles over the years, including almost all the Specialized Body Geometry variants....the WTB is superior to any BG saddle in my book (& in my shorts).
I've got the cheapie, but I will upgrade to a Ti rail version when the time comes.
Scottie Rox 04-24-2004, 05:28 PM Im 205 on a hardtail and I got a $20 selle royale, male specific seat. I ride the hell out of it and crash alot, and the only damage after a year is from where I slamed my cars trunk lid onto it.
SasquatchSC 04-24-2004, 08:32 PM just had my first ride on my new Azonic Love Seat. First few miles it was odd with the width of the nose... but once i was used to it. i like it a lot!
mward 04-24-2004, 08:36 PM Selle San Marco Aspide. 180g and so far very durable. Flipped myself over my bars 3x in the last race and the seat is still in one piece with no bends in the rails.
Brandon 04-24-2004, 11:12 PM WTB SST series.. I've been riding an SST with Ti rails for a couple years, the cover is starting to come off but the rails never bent. Greenfish has the SST 2K saddles with Ti rails for $30 right now I just ordered 2 of them.
pissedoffwookie 12-29-2004, 03:59 PM One thing to note on sadles is that as clydes our sit bones are more than likely farther apart........This was something that I figured out at least 10 years ago right about when the original bontrager saddle became all the rage.......it seemed everyone loved that saddle but it was pure torture for me.....and i had the perfect saddle which was speced on stumpjumpers in the early '90's it was a WTB design basically a modified early SST but with a slightly longer nose and slightly wider tail..........well when it came time to replace that one bontrager came on the scene with this circumcised saddle......it just so happened that at my bike shop we had the original that the bontrager started out as....the Titanio 2000........I'm guessing it was the same saddle Keith had laying around and decided to chop it cuz it was too wide for him.....anyhooo this saddle is perfect......fast forward to today.....the titanio 2000 is out of production so i began my search again...and lo and behold i find Koobi........american design and built by selle italia and so far the wides mens racing style saddle made (no its not womens saddle wide) at 6.25"...it has the junk channel so our significant others will be happy to and you can even choose the density of the foam.....this saddle rocks!!!!!!!!!
