View Full Version : Moots Smoothie Blend? paramountz 03-31-2004, 07:29 AM It seems there is not much info for this frame. I searched the web only 8 results I would like any real opinions reviews. Thanks jl 03-31-2004, 07:51 AM Here's a good article on the smoothie. http://205.147.231.78/bikes/1002_moots.shtml I have heard complaints about the pedal-bob. I think moots is trying to address it with the new progressive 5th element. I'm sure the blend, al, and ti all are comparable in ride, it's just the $ that differs :) I don't know what the warranty on the blend would be front triangle lifetime, rear traingle 2 years.... paramountz 03-31-2004, 08:52 AM Just what I was looking for thanks. darkmatter 03-31-2004, 01:26 PM I am pretty sure moots began offering this bike to clear up some of issues people had with the smoothie. The aluminum back end should stiffen the bike up significantly. I have never read a good review of the smoothe but i haven't ever read a review of the aluminum or blend versions. I would be interested to hear about them, but I would be the first one to try one out. ibis-ss 03-31-2004, 03:22 PM I rode one of the Smoothies all TI at Interbike last year. I have to say I agree with the other testers that the bike does not handle well. The people at the booth were all great and very cool but the bike was a real let down. The front end is very nervous and did not track well. The rear end over the rocky bumpy turns would not hold a line well. Especially after riding an Enduro 04 and Intense 5.5 back to back for comparision. I rode a Black Sheep 29" Ti hardtail that was much better than the Smoothie. I guess that is why they went with the Al rear end this year. Hecubus 03-31-2004, 03:30 PM I think the consensus is that its a very nicely made bike but there are simply better choices for the money. Seems like the kind of person who would buy this is the kind who absolutely must have Ti. A few years back I only rode Ti hardtails and if switching to a FS that is probably what I would have wanted. Now I know better. bhutata 03-31-2004, 05:18 PM Seems to me like the Smoothie Blend would be the best combo, since the aluminum rear triangle would provide more stiffness than ti. Can anyone comment on the ride qualities of the Smoothie Blend vs. the Smoothie Ti? For that matter, now does the Smoothie Al handle? MTBDad 04-01-2004, 03:50 AM about the smoothie. In fact Larry Mettler of MtnHighCyclery rode the progressive Smoothie last autmn in Vegas and said he was very impressed with the bike. I am actually strongly considering one for myself. I find the comment "I have never seen a good review" an interesting one. Mountain Bike magazine (oh yeah, they're objective) did a review and about all they could say is that for a $6000 bike, they would like to have a more advanced suspension system. Dirt Rag's Maurice Tierney (a veyr object clydesdale) did a review several issues ago and was very positive about the bike. Dreamrides.com in Moab is a moots dealer and has done and documented two very in depth tests of the smoothie, I suggest you look at those. darkmatter 04-01-2004, 04:08 AM My father is also a Moots loyalist, as I am sure you are. I will check those out but I meant what I said. I believe I have seen the dream ride review. At the time I was comparing the reviews to that of the Ti Titus Racer X. The Racer X gets much better reviews on a very consistent basis. The major complaint about the smoothie is the noodley rear end. jl 04-01-2004, 05:20 AM Here's the link to dreambike. Best SHORT Travel XC Mountain bike. If that's what your looking for :) http://www.dreambike.com/smoothie.htm MTBDad 04-01-2004, 06:10 AM a man of great insight. You should listen to him!! Ride whatever you like, its all good!! jcw 04-01-2004, 06:13 AM I had also read the "negative reviews" (ie the review in Mtn Bike last year) and finally got to ride the Ti Smoothie at Interbike this past fall. I was expecting a flexy bike that didn't handle all that well, and was very suprised. In fact it was my favorite of all the bikes I tested - and I tested a lot. As with all bikes, handling comes down to two things, fit and rider preference. If you prefer the handling of a longer travel, slack geometry freeride bike, you're probably not going to like the smoothie much. It's a 3" travel xc bike afterall. It would definitely be on my list if I had the $$$. about the smoothie.
