View Full Version : Chainring wobble?

I just installed my Turbine LP's with Salsa rings and the chain line shifts quite a bit as I pedal through the rotation. Probably 2-3 mm's from left to right. Something isn't straight. Has anyone had the same problem, or knows what's going on? I'm not sure if it also happens with the other rings, it's just real easy to see on the high ring.

when I was working on my wifes bike. It seems that sometimes when installing the rings it's possible to cause the rings to flex out of flat when tightening the ring bolts down. I checked with Zinns book and a mechanical engineering(and bike mechanic) friend. It's fairly common and all you do is flatten it out. Zinn says use an adjustable wrench. I used a vice and it worked just fine.

Seems kind of weird, but it happens and the fix is easy.

1 Dirt under the chainring (remove/clean/reinstall)
2 Broken chainring bolt, causing the ring to flex (replace bolt)
3 Bent chain ring (take ring off and lay on flat surface to check. Repair as above)
4 Over-tightened chainring bolt (see below)

When you tighten the bolts, snug each of them up evenly to begin with. Gradually increase the pressure, until all are tight. If you tighten one bolt up to begin with, you may distort the ring, not allowing the other bolts to seat the ring against the crank arm.

Good luck,
STEVE

diagonally rather than circumferentially. That is, on a five bolt pattern, gradually apply
torque in 1,3,5,2,4 sequence. This helps prevent warping the chain ring as you torque
the bolts. On a four bolt use a 1,3,2,4 pattern.
