View Full Version : Yakima riding conditions
Anyone know what the trail conditions are like at Cowiche Canyon? What about the wildflowers ... are they blooming in the desert yet? Some friends and I are heading out that way next weekend. Thankx in advance for any intel you might have.
ebxtreme 03-28-2004, 09:58 PM ...but I'd love to learn more about that area. Yakima's a short jaunt from Seattle (relatively) so I'd love to hear more about the trail systems over there.

Largextracheese 03-28-2004, 10:05 PM Dude! Yakima is no place to ride unless you're packin' a piece. Crackima........ah shucks......
Just Jokin' man, have fun!
Get_Outside_N_Ride 03-29-2004, 02:33 AM Tanem junction. That place is killer on a Dirtbike, and from what I remember there's plenty of spots to shuttle!
EB,
Bike arrives end of week. I'll need to ride for a week or two before I hook up with you and the crew so it's looking like maybe mid April you'll have to show me around!

...but I'd love to learn more about that area. Yakima's a short jaunt from Seattle (relatively) so I'd love to hear more about the trail systems over there. uhhhhhh ... any time you read about trails that I ride its virtually certain that A)it wasn't shuttled, B)it didn't have a significant volume of stunts (if any) and C)it ain't no freeriding. I've got nothing against people who enjoy the above types of riding, its just not something I'm into. I'm part of that quickly dying minority of riders ... the general cross-country who likes and prefers to keep tires in contact with dirt at all times.
Cowiche Canyon is about 10-12 miles worth of fun swoopy trails through the sagebrush. Nothing really technical about them although the descent into and climb out of the canyon can make ya work some. I lived in the Tri-Cities for about 6 years and grew to really enjoy sagebrush singletrack. As an added attraction, the desert is blooming this time of year and its very fun to "stop and smell the balsomroot" while riding ... at least I think so.
Here's a link to a few pics from the Cowiche Canyon area if you're interested. Cowiche Canyon trails (http://www.geocities.com/mtnwuff/cowiche.html)

Uhhhhhhhhhh, anywhere that's got those slithering lil buggers, you can count me out! I've had to many run ins with rattler's and I can't say I care to again if I can avoid it!!!
BTW, who cares what type of riding you do. I'm not trying to sound like a prick just like you weren't but we are all "Mtn. Biker's". I hate this sub category BS that everyone puts people into. After all I did the same stuff on my Nishiki hardtail some 10 years ago that I do now on my FS rig, I just prefer a more cush ride. I could care less if your wearing pink tights and on a single speed or sportin' the gangsta look on a 10" travel bike, just as long as your cool with others, your cool with me!
Cheers

Just wanted to let people know the kind of "mountain biking" that I prefer to do so there wouldn't be any misconceptions of what kind of trails I was talking about that exist in Yakima. I'd hate for someone to drive all that way thinking they were going to ride one thing and have it turn out to be something completely different. You're right though about the pigeon hole thing ... we're all mountain bikers". The fact that I choose to do it on a full rigid singlespeed is irrelavent.

Amen brotha,
I still don't like rattle snakes... :p
ebxtreme 03-29-2004, 10:50 PM I ride both XC and FR and personally don't care to pigeonhole any riders because of their bikes, lycra/baggies or the terrain that they choose to ride or not ride. The important thing is that people are out in the woods (or sagebrush :-) getting dirty and having fun. Ultimately, I prefer more technical XC, but I also love a fast, swoopy descent (devil's gulch, chickamin creek, etc.) equally as much.
If someone wants to shuttle their DH rig all day long, more power to them. I do that from time to time as well, but ultimately I ride my bike to get exercise, hang out with my buddies and see a lot of terrain that I wouldn't get into otherwise. What people wear or how they ride makes no difference to me. BTW, one of my crew rides a fully rigid Spot singlespeed with a ti fork and he rips. We're all mt. bikers.....doesn't matter what you ride.

Word is born! lol
EB,
I'm picking up two norcos this weekend, got a deal on a Six and the A-line for $3500 US including tax. I'm going to take the parts for what I want, and sell the rest. I also put an order in for the 04 Dirt bag. If I don't like either of the Norco frames, I'm just going to utilize their parts on the DB. Cant wait man!!!

Holy crap, so let me get this straight. You picked up an A-Line and a Six for $3500! That's a great deal. You'll definitely come out alright from that dealio.
Curious, did you swing up to Tim's up in Everett to get those Norco's? Not looking for a new bike, but I've heard many good things about those guys and the one time I was up in their shop, they seemed like cool folks with a good product selection. I'm off to Moab next week, but let's hook up in mid-April for a ride. Sounds like you'll have a bike put together by then.
Cheers,
EB

Eric,
Actually I found a guy in BC to cut me that deal. Don't ask me how he's offering such a good deal, but it's legit and he owns a bike shop up there. Both retail for $4700 here in the states as I called one of the shops around here to get a quote so I'm hoping that my new ride this year will be paid for by my research and re-sale abilities. ;) I'm headed up this weekend to get them, can you say stoked!
Have fun in Moab, I've heard its epic! Don't forget to take pics if you can and post up when you get back. I should be ready to ride by mid-April.
BTW, I just bought a www.viosport.com attachement for my cannon zr60 so come summer, will have to hit up Whistler and get some footage.
L8ta man,
Josh
