I'm heading down to the Gorge this weekend for some riding with some of my local boys. We're either going to hit Post Canyon both days, or ride Syncline one day.

What's the best route for riding Syncline? Last time we rode it we just rode the technical parts (Little Moab, I think its called) up to the fence and then back down about 3 times. First time up on the Jeep road, but the next two times we thought it was more fun to climb up the technical stuff. I'm sure there's a better and longer route you can put together, but there were several orange vests with big guns lurking around, so we didn't feel like exploring too much in our tan and gray clothes.

After 3 runs we headed back towards the car and took the mellow trail along the base of the cliff for about 40 minutes, but it got dark so we just headed back down the trail. Is there a long, semi-epic loop you can make out of these trails? From what I've heard we're cutting ourselves pretty short.

I go up to the house at the top of the hill, take a right, go past the creek, up the hill, and then drop down into Hidden Valley. The best trail up at Syncline. A real technical gnarly ride that takes an expert rider to clean. Along a cliff, over rocks, and down gnasty chutes. You will love it. Also, you can take a left at the house, cruise up Crybaby, and drop down the Coyote Cliffs. Another gnarly descent.

A great ride.

PS when are you guys riding? I would show you around...as I'm going up this weekend.

Hey Jaybo, it would be super cool if we hook up with you. Sounds like you have a great route. Our plan is to hit Post Canyon Sat with our heavy gear and Syncline on Sunday, but I think we're fairly flexible. I'll PM you my cell phone# and email.

Thanks for showing us the routes Jaybo. I've finally found the true meaning of singletrack. Ride Syncline's Hidden Valley sometime and y'all will know exactly what I'm talking about. Maybe halftrack would be a better word for it.

And the drops they're building at Post Canyon are buttery smooth! Props to GFRA for the work they're doing out there. http://www.gfra.org

Plain and simple, Hood River Rocks!

Sounds like FM had a crazy BC weekend as well - riding both Pemberton and Squamish with Zane.

It was fun riding with you guys. Hidden Valley is a lot of fun. The scenery is like no place I have ever been. It isn't prettier then anywhere I have been, but just different. The area afte that off camber hill with the waterfall is very cool. You guys rode it like veterans.

Come back again.

PS I got a pretty good sunburn.

I gotta agree, the Hood River area has some great riding!

Pics and ride writes up from our trip there last year:

Yeah we sure did. Wow!

CraigH, you're from vancouver.... have you ridden in squamish much? We rode this trail "icy hole of death" (at least that's what we think it was) holy crap it was the most difficult trail I've ever been on, with or without a bike! It sort of reset my idea of trail difficulty. I couldn't believe the size of the drops, much bigger than anything I saw on seymour, and no easy option lines even for walking. Zane said it was similar to "babylon by bike"- I guess there's a section where if you can't huck it, you have to rapel down, there's one rope for you and another for your bike. I was wishing I had some rope... a couple of times I was tempted to just let my bike go, shimmying down on my a$$ and trying to find footings and hold on to my bike was getting difficult.....

My hats off to the locals who can ride that stuff, I'm humbled.

Sounds like FM had a crazy BC weekend as well - riding both Pemberton and Squamish with Zane.

I've ridden Squamish, but not as much as I'd like. We are talking about doing a XC ride on Good Friday up there.

I've ridden Icy Hole during the Squamish gathering about 3 years ago, but don't recall it being that bad. I wonder if you are talking about a different trail?

Babylon is up in Whistler I think, but I've never ridden that trail, maybe this summer.

Have you ridden Boogieman on Seymour? The second half after the canoe log teeter is probably the most difficult trail on Seymour. The rock faces there are much easier to ride than walk down.

It's very likely we were lost.... Our BC pal Zane was under the impression that icy hole would put us out onto rollercoaster, but instead we ended up coming out on the other side of the road, and had to climb out. None of us had ridden it before. We rode "crouching tiger hidden squirrel" earlier in the day, that was killer.... this trail was a whole different deal though. The drops weren't really slabs- lots of folds, holes, and ledges. Obvious from the tracks that people weren't rolling them, they were hucking... Anyways it looked very fresh, maybe we stumbled onto something....

I'll take a look at my maps at home tonight to see if I can figure out where you were.
