Just bought MAVIC 317 with XT hubs.

Do I need to get a rim strip or whatever they call it, or can i go ahead and mount my tires?

What other things should I look out for when installing or riding them the first time?

Thank you!

I actually just bought a wheelset with xt (disc) hubs. To my dissappointment the rear hub was running really tight. After posting it I was recommended to just rebuild it. This fixed the problem. Also, if you bought the hoops online youll want to check for loose spokes.

No i bought them new at supergo.

What do you mean by running tight?
Are you talking about a recall?
What rims did you get?

The rim strip or tape protects the tube from the sharp eye holes the spokes sit in.
You will get a flat without the rim strip or some rim tape.
Someone in here suggested using fiber tape thats used for packing boxes as an alternative.
Most wheelsets should come with rim tape installed, is there not any on the rim already?

1. Yes, you need to use rim strips. Only Mavic's tubeless rims do not need rim strips (for standard or UST tires).

2. Cup and cone bearing hubs (like the XT) need to be properly adjusted before the first use (I repack them with grease, too). They are never adjusted perfectly from the factory. If thet are not adjusted right they may wear out prematurely.

Ya my rims did not come with a rim strip.
I can see the eye holes.

Should I take em back see if they'll put one on?

And how should I adjust my xt hubs, if i need to.

I just bought a roll and put it on. Such is the price you pay for the $100 wheelset.
