View Full Version : Epic Mascara
litespeedchick 03-22-2004, 10:54 AM Anyone have a suggestion for a brand of mascara I can wear on a ride? Waterproof, smudgeproof, clump proof? Thanks.

I don't usually put makeup on just for riding, but often I ride after work, for which I do get dressed up including makeup. I find Maybelline Volume express waterproof is just fine and doesn't run. Any other type of makeup runs though (eyeliner, lipstick etc).
I don't wear makeup to ride but I always wear earrings. :)
SSteel 03-22-2004, 03:48 PM There is nothing more attractive than a woman on a mtb. No mascara required... ;)
:D
litespeedchick 03-23-2004, 05:21 AM Thanks...I'll give it a shot. I have the fix for the others, though. Buy eyeshadow in a dark color...it needs to be a good brand (I use Stila) with lots of pigment. Then wet a fine brush and make paint with the shadow and use it like eyeliner. Stays forever. Actually, my face leaks/absorbs makeup at work or whereever...I always had smudged or disappearing eyeliner before I discovered that trick.

...do you put make-up on to ride?? I am not criticizing ...just curious..
kpicha 03-23-2004, 04:19 PM Yeah, that Maybelline is pretty impressive. I quit using b/c it was such a pain to get off. I practically needed a hammer and chisel!
M-U-M 03-23-2004, 04:31 PM Don't even let me think that was a serious question.

I coordinate my nail polish (both finger and toe) to my hubs and head set—Chris King PURPLE!!
My husband is searching for a bike for me and noticed the mascara question. I'm a consultant with Mary Kay and our Waterproof Mascara will do the trick. We also have a wonderful oil-free eye make-up remover that will remove it completely. Check out my website at www.marykay.com/cindyritchey
If you aren't local, I'd be happy to mail it. And don't forget your sunscreen!! (we have that too :)
Happy Riding!

I got cable rub which messed up the finish on my frame (anodized too, grr) and got some blue fingernail polish to cover it - could not resist doing my fingers and toes too. Had to take it off once real life aka work restarted.

On rare occasion I have put mascara on before a ride.
Just curious - do you wear makeup when you aren't riding?
Funny thing about this forum - maybe because MTB'ng is so male dominated, but there is a definite reluctance to admit to doing girly things here. Reminds me a bit of the 80's when women wore manly like suits to work to try and be taken more seriously in the workplace.

I am all about the girlie things. I put on a dress after almost every ride. The original motivation was that it made it so much easier to change in a crowded parking lot. But I like changing back into a woman after being covered with mud and sweat in a pack of boys for six hours (now don’t anyone comment on that statement!). Anyway, it is all about how you ride, and even if my sox match my nails, that match my headset, I will still put my riding up against anyone’s—might not beat them down the hill, but I will beat them up a lot of them and I will still be back there at the end of the day. Now, if I could just get camelback to coordinate with my shoes!
kpicha 03-24-2004, 03:43 AM Speaking of matching shoes, I went to the LBS the other day and they showed me some red Sidi's that would have matched my hubs perfectly :) At $135,though, that was a definite pass.

Ah ha! I bet you really wear a skort and just won't admit it!! ;)

Good thread!
I too often ride after work and thus have makeup on. And I will admit to putting on a little concealer before heading out for a weekend ride if I’m looking a bit ragged. Don’t want to scare the deer & squirrels you know!
As for earrings, I use to wear them, but not anymore. I had one get pulled out by a tree branch last summer. Ouch. I found the earring though. :)
Speaking of girrly things...I always bring a hanky with me when I ride because my nose always gets runny, and I can't (or won't)do the snot blowing thing. Years ago my Mom (who's very old world) gave me some fancy flowery ones. So, I'll be all muddy & sweaty and I'll pull out this lacey, flowery hanky, blow my nose and my riding buddies laugh! :D
little b 03-24-2004, 08:04 AM you won't do the snot blowing thing? i love that. you don't have to stop, you can just keep rolling, but suddenly you have clear breathing again. really. it's the best thing. i resisted for a long time, carrying hankies and such. no more.
on one ride last summer, the guys were looking at some view. i cleared my nose over by the trail. one of them spun around and said 'was that beth?? girls don't do that!'. haha.
screampint 03-24-2004, 08:10 AM Oooooo..... I like those Sidi's I want a pair. Not that I have anything to match them, but the fit and look...
screampint 03-24-2004, 08:14 AM I can't help you there. In reality, I like the easiest stuff to get off as possible. I only wear make-up on dates with hubby. Maybe I'm a plain Jane, but I never started wearing it so I just don't. Maybe it's because my mom didn't and my step-mom only wore it occassionally. Or maybe it's because I grew up in Boulder, "where the men shave their legs and the woman don't." (not really true, but not totally off the mark either)
Ghisallo 03-24-2004, 08:41 AM Ditto.
litespeedchick 03-24-2004, 10:39 AM I put on make-up to go out of the house.
To be honest, the real reason for this question was to find some mascara that would not smudge at work...but if I find one that will hold up to a ride, I'll sure as hell wear it then too!
I have recently taken to carrying lip gloss in my camelback. Why put on plain Chap Stick when you can use your sparly pink gloss that smells like birthday cake? Some people might say there was a tiny bit of malicious enjoyment in slapping on the girly stuff just to remind some guys a girl just stomped their asses coming up the hill. But, of course, that would be wrong ;-)
downhillprincess 03-24-2004, 10:51 AM ...don't get me wrong. I put on mascara sometimes before a ride cuz I am blonde and have invisible eyelashes. Plus, I think it is rad when girls go out there and kick butt and look good doing it. I spend majority of my time wearing body armour and full face helmets and looking like a boy, so I am all about looking like a princess any time I can!!!
I like it when you can tell it is a girl underneath all those pads, helmets, armour, whatever.
My boyfriend says he likes it too when I look less like a boy and more like a girl!!
=)
litespeedchick 03-24-2004, 12:52 PM That reminds me....
Years ago, my 2nd ever mountain bike race, I came to a river crossing at the foot of a steep climb where a bunch of spectators had decided to hang out. I was catching one of the beginner men and the crowd starts yelling "pass him" and generally heckling (in a friendly way) the guy for getting passed by a girl. He says to me as I'm coming around "tell 'em you're offended by those sexist remarks, ha ha" and I said, "hell, I'm just happy they can tell I'm a girl in the outfit" Seriously, I'm always a little surprised people can tell when I'm on the bike under helmet, glasses and winter clothes.
downhillprincess 03-24-2004, 01:23 PM If I don't have a pony tail sticking out from under my full face, I always get the "what's up man" from passing bikers, or from guys when I fly by them!! When they get passed and realize it's a girl, you know they gotta step it up! I like it cuz when I ride solo it gives me someone to chase and it is good practice for racing and stuff.
Plus I don't have big boobs to show that I am a girl!! That might help !!! :D

I just got the snot rockett thing down this season. I decided that meant I am now a real mtn. biker. I never thought I'd be doing that, but I kept forgetting to bring tissue! it was a matter of survival really.
tink bell 03-24-2004, 04:04 PM i've found that the boys don't have any trbl recognizing me as female w/my pretty pink disney princess streamers floating out of my bars as i fly past them!
is there a trick to the whole snot rocket thing? i haven't tried it yet. i'm afraid i'll snot all over myself! ;)
kpicha 03-24-2004, 04:15 PM LOL! Yeah, I started too, for the same reason. I need to work on my technique though. Its a good thing the gloves have terry cloth on them ;)
litespeedchick 03-25-2004, 05:34 AM Hey ! I got beaten in a race by a chick w/ streamers! You ever race in Clemson, SC?
