View Full Version : The Niner/Vulture Union
Padre 07-08-2005, 03:19 PM It's done.
I re-assembled her Niner after Impy kindly shipped it back from the CreamPuff.
Figured it was time to couple the Niner with the new fork from Vulture.
I also swapped the ODI/Oury grips for the lock-on Syntace grips and swapped normal WTB tubes for the Specy Turbo tubes in 26".
All these changes brought the total weight down from 22.3lbs to 20.01lbs.
I think this current build is a very real-world lightish ride...plus, she'll get to keep all her teeth. (wouldn't be as confident of that if she was riding Sibex ti....)
For pics/build of the ride or it's previous condition, see here. (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=108017&highlight=Niner)
Padre 07-08-2005, 03:22 PM oh yeah, forgot...this caught my eye when I was putting it back together...nice!

She's said emphatically...."no lighter!!" she says the lighter it goes the crazier it bounces around going downhill....

Very, very nice.
So did you have the fork custom made? Is it suspension corrected at 470mm? I am curious for a build I am doing and am settling on the Karate Monkey since I would have to wait a long time for the fork otherwise.
Thanks!
split 07-08-2005, 07:44 PM Do ya think the 26er tubes will hold up being all stretched out to 29"? That is a nice build! Is that a King Ti cage there? No other way to go if you want light and durable.;)
Most likely the Vulture fork is using True Temper fork blades. Henry James has been supplying them for awhile now.
Rainman 07-08-2005, 08:27 PM Can you have a close look at the spider on the Niner and tell me if you are seeing any damage from the chain to the ends of the spider attachment arms please?
Thanks,
R.

I think Split is talking about 26" inner tubes. Not fork blades.
Split, generally 26" tubes work well. Helps to inflate them a bit more before you insert them in the tire. Just do not use a skinny one.
Pump up a 26" tube without putting it in a tire. It's inner diameter will be larger than the outer diameter of most tires.

I did.
I had Wade at Vulture base the fork around the height of the KM fork.
I had this one in about 4 weeks, I beleive.

I have run a patched Specy Turbo tube for months, one time.
I normally run regular WTB 29er tubes, but when I want light, they are very dependable.
Yep, King Ti cage.

Do you mean on the cranks?
Rainman 07-09-2005, 03:20 PM I mean... where the 32 tooth chain ring attaches to the spider. On the ends of the attachment arms, where they are very close to the chain-run, the carbon fibre ends of the spider arms can sometimes get worn down by the chain if there is not enough clearance between the chain plates and the ends of the attachment arms.
See my pic.

It might....but it'll be clad in 4lbs of extra wheel/tire weight....

What might those training wheels consist of? Alex td-17 perhaps?

Padre 07-09-2005, 09:13 PM Thanks Padre
Try running a skinny chain. Her hollow-pin jobber doesn't make contact with the spider at all. I'm sure a meaty PC-7x would....

If they ever show up at the Path for the build, yes.
If not, the wheels will come off the Rig! Meaty!
