So, me and Largeextracheese (LEC) from this forum have been exchanging emails recently in an attempt to hook up for rides. Coincidentally, our crew ran into his FLMB crew at St. Ed's on Thursday night where we BS'd with them for a few minutes. Anyway, Largeextracheese and I finally got together and headed north with a couple of my buddies for a ride on the North Shore.
I think it was LEC's first time on the Shore (although he's hit Whistler prior), so I thought he should get a good taste of the scene. We hit the Lazy Bay Cafe for breakfast since we had to wait for my buddies. This place is at the bottom of Seymour and is littered with riders and FR bikes. Anyway, we ended up standing in line behind Wade Simmons and his girlfriend. As a result, we had a ~10 minute conversation with him about how his leg is feeling and that huge gap on Fromme, the new RMX Pro/triple 8/Saint combo he's riding and various other topics. I've spoken to him a couple of times before, but it never ceases to amaze me how mellow/humble he is...definitely a cool way to start our day.
We were trying to decide on whether to shuttle Seymour or pedal up Fromme. We opted for Fromme.....and it was in awesome shape! We opted out of Seymour for 2 reasons:
1. there was a search and rescue going on and they were using the upper lot as a staging area (hence people had to park at the very top to ride) and
2. we heard there was still a bit of mud on CBC and snow near the entrance....so we opted to do the socially responsible thing and stay off it for a little while longer.
Ride Report:
We rode up past Upper Oilcan and pushed the last bit to the 7th switchback to start with 7th Secret. There was snow on the road so we had to push up to the trail and just a bit of snow at the beginning of the trail, but overall it was a great one to begin with and everyone rode all of the logs (which are a blast on this trail) and the other built up stuff. Then, we climbed back up the road and hit Upper Oil Can - which is in phenomenal shape. This is where LEC showed off his prowess on skinnies and ladders....he cleaned a couple of extended ladders that were sweet!
After Upper Oilcan, we stopped to take a look at the gaps on Air Supply. LEC, myself and Armondo all hit the smallest one and LEC had a funny landing on that one... For all of those who have looked at these gaps and thought "damn, those are scary." they're going to extend the trannies a bit so there is a little safety zone in case folks come up short. I think this might actually push me over the edge to hit those suckers. Maybe next time?? :D Then, we headed down Pink Starfish and ended with Crippler. Both were in great shape and Pink Starfish was a total blast....I highly recommend this trail. We sessioned a bunch of stretches on Pink Starfish and LEC took the first descent down a steep granite slab and made it look super easy. Everyone was riding solid and I think people's limits were pushed a little. It's early season, so there's no reason to kill ourselves now (especially with Garbonzo opening at Whistler).
No major crashes...just the usual bumps and bruises. All in all, a great day on the Shore. No pics taken - just video.
