holy crap! That's lighter than my road bike.

I'd like to see a pic of the whole thing too. Also, I like to see a pic with that weight on a hanging digital scale.

for every minute you spend figuring out how to drop 10 more grams,
i will spend a minute riding and probably come out ahead of the game.

...

What size frame?

You should add a price column to that spread sheet, that way I wouldn't feel so bad ;)

I could figure out how to drop 10g off that bike while riding. Heck, in 3 seconds I figured that a lighter bolt-on seat collar would save over 10g. There is nothing wrong with a light bike. It seems to be a good quality build except the ti bolt-on skewers with disc hubs. Everything else on that bike is great in my opinion. King headset, Thomson post and stem, Stylo cranks; all quality parts.

Nice.
But is the Masterpiece post long enough? A 350mm post and the low profile saddle should not let me get the extension I need.

Daner

Re: The Thomson parts - Did you cut down the Masterpiece post? Thomson claims that the 31.6 x 350 weighs 193g.

Also, if you wanted to drop at least 20g you could go with an X2. An Oval Concepts stem with the carbon face plate and Ti bolt upgrade would drop you down to just a bit over 100g. Even so, I'd choose the X4 for a SS.

Super cool and very inspiring (uh oh!). :D

I know that you are able to fit on a small frame, so that helps just a tad.
The scary thing is that there are still places to lose weight without building a fragile bike. You could go even lighter (subjective choices, of course) for about the same $$ and still have a race day trail bike. Okay, back to work so I can afford my next project. :D

Ok everyone I have the pics and some answers to questions. When I set out to build this bike I wanted it to be a light race bike but I also wanted it to be made of good sturdy parts. The Thomson post is uncut and is just below the max line, if I were any taller I would be sol. I could easily make the bike lighter, but these are the parts I am confident ridding. The frame is a small and has geometry similar to the Rig but feels a tad bit more compact and lower to the ground. It just feels like it wants to be raced. I also only weigh about 145.

I did up the spread sheet weighing the parts individually before I put them on the bike, which is were I came up with the 17.71 pounds. In order to weigh the bike as a whole I had to put a board on the scale. The board weighed 20 lbs and then I placed the bike on the board which came to 37.85. If you subtract the two you get 17.85 pound, which is damn close to the projected build weight. I used a Salsa Ti skewer in the back because the Control Tech was too short, which probably would account for the difference in the two weights. My scale has been certified and is used for Collegiate track meets to weigh the implements, so it is verified.

I will be happy to answer any more questions that people have.

Are you racing your new ride at Uncle Sammy's this weekend in Washington, IA? I'd love to see your bike close up. I'll be there on my Sugar 293 with a good 10 pounds on your Niner (not to mention a good 50 pounds on my body over your weight). That means I'm pushing 60 more pounds off the starting line on the first pedal crank.

Good thing I've got gears. :D

Amazing build. I hope to go that light as well one day, but starting off with a heavier frame and fork (I woouldn't dare ride a 540g fork with my height and heft), I'll have to go more extreme with other parts to make up for that.
Even more amazing is the room for further lightening you left, while coming to such a low total. That thing must be a trail rocket!

Glad you already have your offspring. With that seat tilt, I'd have to give that up pernanently :-) That, or I'd have to use the bike for 4-cross.

Now go ride it!

BTW, where can I find the Boone website for chainrings? Not COGS (that is what I always find), but for chainrings. I need to get one of those. My Shitmano 32t ring is already wearing out after only about a dozen rides.

Looks like you select the bolt circle, # teeth and it gives you a price. I'll be getting my cog(s) and ring once I dial in gearing choice.

Thanks for all the detailed pics, I went with the green also. Is it my current state of mind or is it more of a silver/steel blue/green than just green. I think I would call the color steel blue, just sounds nice! Hard to tell on line.

So how much do YOU weigh?

Why? Is there anything flimsy on it for the average rider? Maybe for someone 250 plus there are some better choices, but for most guys I would say these parts are just fine.

The only thing unproven I guess is the frame. I have seen Scandium frames (for a 26" bike) weighing 3/4 of a pound less than the Niner for whatever thats worth...

The fork is quite light as well and as far as I know theyve been holding up??

I certainly hope my initial remarks didn't come across as critical- they were meant to be complimentary. And I thought it was cool that it is a bike capable of being ridden every day under all circumstances; a real bike!
Of course, my brain gets spinning about how to make it even lighter without detracting from it's durability, but hey... I can dream, can't I?! :D

The bb height is 11.5" to the center of my crank bolt, in the ebb position shown in the picture, which is clost to 6 O' clock. The line guides are something I have never seen before and the line just snaps into them and believe it or not they actually stay and are so simple.

Hey, I hope you like the frame it is a great frame. It's only fault is that it doesn't accept 29ers. I had the Dean built up to 19 pounds at its lightest, but it could go a lot lighter. Check out the DT Swiss hubs and rims, they are light, engage pretty fast and are cheaper than the Kings. The AC make a great race wheel, but I will not use them for everyday ridding, but time will tell, maybe they can handle the abuse.

Yes that is the right hub. The 317 rim should work great for your size. The AC wheels would probably work well for you, but will be a bit more pricey.

I feel that the ti fork is perfect for my size, 145 lbs. It is very plush and has a perfect amount of stiffness, but if I were much bigger, I would probably not feel comfortable ridding it. Who knows, maybe it would feel similar for a heavier rider.

Well I have ridden the Niner hard for the past 3 or 4 days, so I can give a report on some of my findings. I will compare to the Rig, for those of you that have one. The Niner has a very stiff rear triangle, much stiffer than that of the GF Rig. When I stand up to mash through a hill, I can’t feel any frame movement at all. I can get the rear tire on my Rig to almost hit the stays. When you put force on the Niner’s pedals, it moves. The Niner is very easy to accelerate, which could be a contribution of the low weight. Once rolling I can easily notice the steering is much quicker than that of the Rig. The Niner handles tight twisty trails and switchbacks better than any bike I have ever ridden and yes that includes all 26” bikes. The Rig has noticeably slower handling characteristics. The Niner’s ride is very smooth on rough terrain, which has a lot to due with the Spicer fork on the front, but the rear end is not jarring in the rough like one might expect. The scandium frame seems to provide a great blend between a smooth ride and the stiffness that a single speed frame needs.

I rode this bike yesterday with the fastest single speed rider in our 100 mile area and he noted that I was either getting in really good shape, or I must really like my new bike. I think it was both, but I really pushed him and that is what I wanted. The Niner is one fast bike that I would not change a thing about.

I rode this bike yesterday with the fastest single speed rider in our 100 mile area and he noted that I was either getting in really good shape, or I must really like my new bike. I think it was both, but I really pushed him and that is what I wanted. The Niner is one fast bike that I would not change a thing about.
Nice, very nice. I'm looking forward to more ride reports and pics.

You would need to bolt the saddle to the top tube to get anywhere near being able to ride my new frame!

I am just working out what the weight may be ;-)

All my bikes are under 18 lbs and I doubt this one will break that rule!!!

1 Week until I get the frame.

Just worked it out as a singlespeed using most of the parts off my ultralight 26" bike.
16lbs WITH the maverick SC32!

Wow, that is crazy light. Do you have the data, I would love to see your parts list and weights?

The only thing that sucks about it...
Is that it is at your house and not mine! :D

I'll be happy to break it in for you while the knee is healing. You wouldn't want to rush into riding too soon, right? So, I'll give you my address to ship it to, and I'll even pay for the shipping.

I'm glad to see a flat bar on such an excellent build. I've yet to see the need for the bar du jour risers for cross country bikes.
