View Full Version : Moots - Mooto X
Hi, Does any one have a Moots MootoX (non-YBB) as an SS preferably disk version that they can give me the low down on, I am considering going with this rather than expanding my stable of IF's any more! :D
Any info will do on any Mooto X as well ;)
Cheers Nige, :)
PICS would be good as well. ;)

Search for posts by Donkey. I believe he has a geared MootoX.

Beyond the fact that its a great bike and is an awesome ride. What is your aversion to the YBB version? I think it adds the perfect extra cush with the 29" tire to make the bike nearly feel like a FS 26er yet much faster.

Hi Chic,
I can not out my finger on it totally but I have just sold my standard Geared YBB as I could not get on with the ride characteristics of it compared to my harttail Ti IF.
But as I loved many other aspects of my Moots I want to go rigid and 29er all at the same time, I also want the possibility to run fixed and therefore need the ebb as I will run disks.
Ignoring the ybb, what are your general impression of runing a 29er SS?
Cheers nige.
Live well, ride long ;)
Daner 06-09-2005, 02:42 AM MikeSee, where are you?
;)
donkey 06-09-2005, 07:01 AM Nige-
Do it. I have a non-ybb mooto with a rigid fork. Gears. It rocks. Possibly my favorite of the many bikes I've owned over the years. Any specific questions I can answer for you?

29er as a SS is the way to go!!! When I bought my frame I originally planned for gears although as a frequent singlespeeder and given I built the bike over the winter when conditions weren't great I decided the initial build would be singlespeed. And well, 6 months later, its still singlespeed and I have a full XTR drivetrain sitting in the garage gathering dust!!!!! How is that for an answer. I'm thinking of buying another Moots from now with an EBB, punt that darn tensioner!
Do it, you'll enjoy it.

Hi,
Would like to see a pic if poss ;) as the one thing that I do not like about the Mooto is the little support strut between the seat post and top tube - does yours have it? if not what size is it - I have seen some ybb's with out it - so I am assuming that it is size specific.
Also - are you running it with your normal 26er sizing, as regards top tube lenght, seatpost layback and stem lenght?
What forks are you using and is the frame a standard one, therefore the rigid fork being suspension corrected.
Soz, for all the quesitons, cheers Nige,

Hi, Just noticed the chain ring on the XTR's - what is it, I have a set of XTRs but can not find a chain ring that gives me the right chain line?
Cheers Nige.

Hi, What size is your frame? I am there on an SS29er but which is the biggest question, I want another moots but hate the look of that little strut between the Seat and top tube - I have some questions in to the moots guys to see if i can get rid of it if I go fully custom.

IBIKEAZ 06-09-2005, 09:20 AM hey there. I have a Mooto 20" that doesn't have the cross brace. It's a standard sized frame. Ignore the stem and handlebars as this pic was when I was building it. I love the ride and wouldn't be without the YBB. It's a great bike.

Cheers for the photo of your Moots - gettin closer to making that Moots decision.

doh!!
Just noticed that you have an ebb - how is it, are there any excessive issues with dirt and water ingress having the split ebb shell?
Does it stay nice and tight?
any other comments on it?
Cheers nige

IBIKEAZ 06-09-2005, 09:55 AM EBB is great so far (7 months). I had a really muddy 24 hr race and no problem after. I just washed it off. no sqeaks or problems. Scott
ssRoughRider 06-09-2005, 01:24 PM I think whatever Moots you get you'll be very happy -especially if it's got BIG wheels!
I've had mine since 2000 -I think the first year- and it's my pride & joy (will try to post a pic later). When I got mine it was only available as a YBB there wasn't a disc option yet -nor EBB. Three sizes (17", 19", 20" - I think) were the choices and none had the mini strut. Mine is a 19", gearie w/replaceable hanger. Went that route even though the UNO option was available...though the ENO wheel still makes it a dandy SS  .
I have to agree with the posters that like the YBB (which sounds like you're pretty familiar with) -it's fabulous. My middle-aged back really appreciates the cush and the rear wheel purchase on the trail is like velcro to a wool jersey :) . Especially for longer rides. I grew up on hard tails and have never owned a double-boing (but have ridden a number of them) and the YBB combined with the big wheels is the perfect balance of comfort and responsiveness. Proven technology that works! Mike C's remarks speak volumes about the design and his exploits tell more than anything!
That said I'm quite sure a hardtail Mooto would just rock too. Just wanted to shout out my love of the YBB. I guess to me one of the things that makes Moots special is the YBB (along w/ the great people/service, designs, construction, welds, etc). Many nice bikes and builders abound some as good as the Steamboat crew too but the YBB -often copied but never exceeded- is to me a primary reason to go with them.
I'm sure that as far the strut issue goes the Moots folks will guide you right with size/tubing suggestions and such. My guess is that the strut design was added later (after mine was acquired) to allow more standover for smaller/shorter riders (the current 20" frame doesn't have it I don't believe).
Don't know if I helped or not but had to jump in.
my $.05 worth,
Good luck with your choice!

-oh, and Poff that is one fine collection of metal!!!!

Beautiful bikes. I'd like to definitely get a Ybb on it. Did you guys build them yourselves or had a shop put it together for you?
