View Full Version : NOS Ibis Road Bike
sargon97 06-07-2005, 03:52 PM Just picked up this nice new old stock Ibis road bike. My first road bike in 12 years. The shop that I got it from said they figured it was a 94 or so and that Ibis was building a few for shops etc before going into production. But I have also read that Ibis was making road bikes in the 80s so I am not sure on the story.
Anyone have any thoughts on the tubing or the history?
The tubes are on the thin side so I was thinking Tange...
Serial number is: 1396

ssmike 06-07-2005, 08:14 PM The decal is from the early 90s. I'm pretty sure the style was pre-92 as the Ibis tandem I had in 93 had a different style. Tubing could be Tange or Columbus. It looks really nice though. Probably rides like a dream.

I had a SS with a #12xx number that I'm pretty sure was a 1992. It has the same downtube decal as your frame.

and my SS with #1112 was made in '91.

Shayne 06-09-2005, 07:00 AM On their website and it's listed as a 1992, which would be correct based on the prorotype Campy Icarus parts that were released in 1992. Its serial number is in the 1500's
If they made a few hundred frames a year yours could very well be a 1992 if Jeff is correct about the year of his second SS.
....there's more where the green Ibis came from. The previous owner also has a ca. 1994 Ibis MTB, red-orange-yellow fade, complete XTR group, sitting in the attic.
I've still got the pictures and spec on my computer, as I made the e-bay ad for the guy. Drop me a line (elwictor@gmail.com) and I'd be happy to send you about 1 MB worth of photos, or put you in touch with the owner.
As far as I know the bike is in mint condition, save for 10 years worth of dust.

I really don't know what tubing was used in my frame. It was very common for frames to be built out of different tubing during the years the frames were made. Kind of a whatever was available or what every was their preference that month. It is totally feasible that it could be a mix of Tange, Columbus, Reynolds, but unlikely. Tange or Columbus are the likely candidates. Shayne's and mine are mountain frames, so your may not have the same tubing - in fact, your tube diameters are smaller.

That's such an elegant fade paint job. Just makes you happy looking at it.
Looks to be an 18"???
And that frame looks to be quite a bit older than 1999.

20". large diameter top tube. pedals are 99. that bike is pre mojo.

Hmmm, the head tube looks shorter than my 20" SS (http://homepage.mac.com/marleyvike/PhotoAlbum8.html)
The fade bike looks like an SS which would mean it's early 90s. Looks like it's got a Koski fork too.
RickD. 06-13-2005, 11:55 PM Beautiful bike! I have a newer Ibis Sonoma in Green, as well as a set of those exact decals I was planning on putting on it when it needs paint. It's nice to see that it's going to look as good in person as I thought it would :)
