I have a ’86? rigid Ibis that I have been riding either as a single speed or a 6 speed(when I have gone over to the dark side, fat and out of shape) for years. The problem is that it came with a chain stay Shimano U-brake that after many years of abuse imploded. Anybody have any ideas where I can find another Shimano U- brake or adapters for V- brakes? Any solutions would be appreciated.

Any BMX shop will sell U Brakes.

aren't contemporary BMX u-brakes different than those giant-horseshoe Shimanos from the 80s?
Or maybe they use the same mounting posts?

All u-brakes (Shimano or Dia-Compe 990, Dia-Tech 996 or even Tektro) mount to the same boss. You can also use Suntour or WTB roller cam brakes. Roller cams are highly recommended for an Ibis of this vintage.
just a thought, but if i remember correctly, magura (the old, pre-05 models) HS-33's mount to U brake bosses. you just invert the EVO adaptors. again, my memory could be fuzzy on this, so if you could try before you bought a set that would be ideal.
