I've done the Cascade Creampuff twice 14:05 in '02, DNF in '03, and did the 24hrs of the old Pueblo Solo Singlespeed (clocked 8 laps ~136 miles) in '03. Any other big guys out there turning the status quo on it's ear?

Any other big guys out there turning the status quo on it's ear? I like this topic. I pride myself on being able to ride longer than most of the folks I ride with. I did the Shenandoah 100 last fall. Finished at the back of the pack, but I finished and had fun. I'm entering some XXC races this year too. My first will be a 35 miler in VA. I regularly do 50 mile plus solo road rides just to keep my endurance up. During the 100, folks killed me on the climbs. But my gravitational assist kicked in on the downhills and I passed them back up. Play to your strengths. I'm never going to beat a skinny, tri-athlete type but I can do all the same stuff they do and probably bench press twice as much (not to mention drink more beers after a ride). I guess it boils down to fitness. I'm a big guy, but I'm not fat or out of shape. bear 03-12-2004, 11:24 AM Hotter 'n Hell Hundred MTB time trial, 2nd place in my age group in '02 - on a Spec Enduro with 2.25" tires. I think I ended up pulling a time w/in the top 1/8 of the whole field ( about 80 with 5-10 expert levels ). 100m Texas Trail Docs Torure Test Jan '04 - ten hours of cruizin but I wasn't the last. No longer considered part of the slow group in any of the rides I go with, the mediums are starting to get frustrated too. And like you said, boy, watch out going downhill ... my and my Quasi just rage ( do they DO the Kamikazee in Vail any more? ) :D sh0rty 03-12-2004, 12:07 PM I am going to attempt the "Test of Metal" in Squamish BC for the first time this year (registered in the Clydesdale class...of course). This will be my first time doing a long race like this. www.testofmetal.com Three months to go, and I am gearing all of my training between now and then to improving climbing...as that is my weakest riding skill...as with many clyde's I'm climbing chalanged. :p The course it prety much all hills, you are either going up, or going down...not many flat spots. (check out the elevation map on the web site) My goal for this first attempt is just to finish...and not walk up the steep hills. ;) I'll let you know how I do in June. sh0rty :P ncj01 03-12-2004, 12:50 PM I rode in and Finished the Oauchita Challenge both times is has been run. The first year only only about 15% of a 200 person field even finished. Of the finishers, I was about 4 from the back. It rained all weekend and during the event and was right around 40 degrees. My finish time was right at 10hrs, I took no breaks other that to refil my waterbottles. Last year, we had good weather, and 300 riders. About 3/4 finished, I beleive...I was mid-pack. I finished in almost 8.5hrs flat. This year (last weekend of the month), I am a course sweep. I have not beent his out of shape since my son was born almost 6 yrs ago. For reference, the http://www.ouachitachallenge.com/ is 65 miles of single track through the Ouachita mountains of Arkansas. This year there is a "tour/challenge" on Saturday, and a straight up race on Sunday. FSRslug 03-12-2004, 09:12 PM I did the 12 Hours of Greenman last year, and loved it. I placed 2nd in the male 24-under solo. I like the endurance races more, because I am not fast, but i dont giv up. A lot of the little guys are freakin fast, but cant go the distance. i plan on doing it again this year, as well as the 24 horus of Afton. Last year the greenman was not about speed, but mental abilities. It rained hard the day before and the course was nearly all mud, some of it shin deep. Lots of people dropped out after only 2 hours. www.greenmanfestival.com www.24hoursofafton.org Brandon. 03-15-2004, 04:22 PM Good to hear from y'all I find my strength is more in the Endurance riding that the speed events, but I did race fairly well in Sport in the one XC race I did last summer. apacherider 03-17-2004, 06:18 PM I met up with some tall ultra-endurance guys on a local trail here in Taos last summer. They said they were from Texas and had ridden the great divide trail from Wyoming to New Mexico in just under 3 days. All of them looked like they could play rugby. They were over 200 pounds I bet, but real lean and real fast. Some of us rode with them after we closed the shop and they were very fast. I ran into them again later that summer at the Leadville 100. Texas seems to have alot of tall and big riders. moishe 07-16-2004, 05:45 PM I've done the Cascade Creampuff twice 14:05 in '02, DNF in '03, and did the 24hrs of the old Pueblo Solo Singlespeed (clocked 8 laps ~136 miles) in '03. Any other big guys out there turning the status quo on it's ear? Oh yeah! I finally finished the Creampuff this year after 3 tries. I've done Leadville twice, and the Shenandoah 100 once. I did the Round & Round 24 hour race solo singlespeed this year (12 laps, 170 miles but the course is fast), and I just signed up for the SM100 again, this time singlespeed. A big reason I finished the Creampuff this year was the encouragement of a fellow clydesdale on the last lap. We gotta stick together! -Mo PattD 07-18-2004, 10:57 PM Oh yeah! Some friends and I are thinking about doing that one. Brandon 07-20-2004, 02:28 PM Oh yeah! I finally finished the Creampuff this year after 3 tries. I didn't race this year (I'm taking a year off but seriously considering entering again next year). I think Don should add a Clyde class to the Puff just for fun. I don't expect to compete with guys that weigh 60-80lbs less than I do but it would be kinda neat to see how high in the rankings the Clydes can get. Delta 08-01-2004, 05:21 PM Rode 52 miles concrete yesterday on my Kona Hoss preparing for the Hotter n' Hell 100 at the end of August. I did the 100 miler last year on a different mountain bike with those Specialized Hemisphere Armadillos tires (1.95'). I go 6' 00" 210 lbs. TobyNobody 08-02-2004, 07:58 AM I've only done shorter distance events (except for some med-dist. road races when I was younger). But this winter I'm gonna try to do the Canadian Ski Marathon (http://www.csm-mcs.com/) - 85 km day one, 75 km day two, classic technique through demanding forest trails. Anyone have advice for building edurance for this type of thing? I'm pretty fit, ~230lbs, 6'4", 30y's old. farley 08-11-2004, 12:24 PM and I just signed up for the SM100 again, this time singlespeed. We gotta stick together! -Mo I actually rode with Moishe very breifly last year at Shenadoah--shortly after Checkpoint 5 if I remember correctly. I did SM100 and Wilderness 100 last year and was on the lookout for fellow clydes the whole time. There arent' many at the long events, but we're there! I too just sent in my $$ for this year's Shenandoah. And, despite my better judgement, I'm going singlespeed. I'm no where near being ready, but there's not much I can do about it now! njmtbbg 08-16-2004, 07:34 PM post. 6'2 225 lbs 3 kids August 03 - 24 Hrs of Allamuchy - 2 man - 10 laps (5 and 5) - 50 miles October 03 - 50K Trail Run - Ramapo Mountain Madness - 5:13.00 April 04 - NJ Marathon 26.2 miles - 4:48:03.1 This Season - NJ State Championship MTB Series - Ranked 7th with 4 races to go. Plus I could probably throw some of those skinny guys a 1/4 mile or so. Would like to chase the weight down to 205 but having a hard time balancing the training nutrition needs with the weight loss nutrition needs (Carbs/Protein/Fats). Any advice on that front would be appreciated. Thanks, B. Any other big guys out there turning the status quo on it's ear? Not by amateur racing. The best endurance ride (http://www.angelfire.com/alt2/mtbstories/rmhigh.html)s are done without a crowd scene. ClydesdaleEx 09-06-2004, 11:50 AM I'm really happy to hear that there are other Clydes out there proving that big guys can hammer, too. I've been XC racing for 2 years, and frequently beat guys 30-60 lbs lighter than I am. I've finished Leadville 100 that past 2 years, breaking 9 hours this year. Also just came back from a great outing at 24 Hours in the Sage in Gunnison, CO. If you want a great course, laid back race, and beatiful scenery, check out that race next year. There's no steep climbs, just gradual stuff, which suits me well, lots of single track, and some technical, but nothing brutal, just enough to keep you on your toes. Keep on pushing the limits. Maybe the organizers will actually be prepared to give out schwag in sizes larger than size M to the winners one of these days! Rubber side down... Brandon 09-07-2004, 11:50 AM Maybe the organizers will actually be prepared to give out schwag in sizes larger than size M to the winners one of these days! Rubber side down... LOL :) I've had to turn down free cycling sox before because they weren't big enough. Swag is good, swag that can't be exchanged for size is a bit lame. OGDHr 09-08-2004, 02:11 PM I did the CCP this year too, finished in 12:27 I also did the 2 man 24HRs of Adrenaline at Laguna Seca and we finished 3rd with 23 laps (12/11) I love the endurance events!! sarge12 09-12-2004, 04:48 PM This is my first post, only because I felt this was a good place to mention my finish in the 12 hours of Pando last year, third place with 98 miles. Also did great in the sport class for the Michigan Cup, 4th overall and I only raced in four of the seven races. 2nd in the Iceman Cometh for sport men 25-29. My best race season yet. I live in Arizona now and anxiously awaiting the start of the state series. norm 02-15-2008, 07:44 PM LOL....I was on the podium for placing 2nd in the clydesdale cat and won a t-shirt that was a small. i used it to clean my bike after muddy rides.....i guess it was a throw in. Psycho Mike 02-15-2008, 10:53 PM Well, I haven't done any endurance races, but I do some long rides. As you can see from my description below my screen name, I've been known to do an imperial Century or two. My first was earlier last year and I did it with road slicks on my FS mtb. At about the 75 mile mark, I had a couple road riders (one on a Cervelo, the other on a Marinoni) peleton up with me...one in front (it was kinda nice to draft for a bit) and one behind. They were both floored that my ~240lb self was out on a 30+ lb mtb to do a C in +30C weather. Pedaling time was about 6.5 hrs on that first C. At some point, I'll have to round up a few of the crazier locals and we'll need to look for an event "just because." Salinas Steve 02-15-2008, 11:53 PM I race XC, but there all 15 to 20 miles, but if I look to my lap times they all get faster. I have a hard time at the starts. Maybe endurance I'm beter served as. I'm volinteering at the next 24hr at Laguna Seca. I hope to ride it later. Victor 02-16-2008, 08:26 AM Yep....were not very fast but we can go forever :) I like the endurance events too. Unlike a xc race, which seems to be more about placing or fastest time, the endurance events are simply about finishing. Kinda like an epic ride with your friends. I compete in 2-3 12 hour races each year, and numerous centuries. Did the creampuff last year too. The best events are the point to point rides or ones with longer loops. Doing 10-15 laps in 12 hrs gets pretty old. Glad to see the thread revived. |
