SMT, I think it's awesome you're always pushing the helmet. I get so tired of seeing kids (and adults, but esp. teenage kids) riding around w/o helmet. It's hard to keep telling people that wearing a helmet isn't much trouble considering the potential consequences of not wearing one. You don't need one until you NEED one. Then if you don't have it, you end up like that guy, or worse.

    Man...kinda makes you think twice.
I never wear a helmet unless I'm shuttling or at a place where they require it.

I'm one of those guys that hates helmets. Especially full face.
I don't know how many times I've ridin UCLA or LMU without a helmet,.. doing grinds, drops, gaping handrails, gaping ledges, wall riding ect...

I don't know if I'll be wearing one to go to the liquor store but definitely any time I'm am really riding.

    wow, glad he's ok.

(to be honest, my first thought was "wow he took a lot of pics. he could probably do a cool time-lapse photography bit" but then I felt guilty. )

I went down super hard yesterday wearing a xc helmet. I ended up with a level 4 separated shoulder requiring surgery in a week. Head smacked first, snapped clean through 3 of the bars in the helmet. My head doesn't hurt at all. I shudder to think what would have happened if I didn't have a helmet or an ill fitting one on.

My last helmet did the same after jumping a gap and meeting a rock. I still carry the helmet in my truck as a reminder...

lately on xc rides i have been sans helmet on long climbs. may have to stop that after seeing those pix.
you would think i learned my lesson in 03 after seeing wch use his head as landing gear on a 25 ft dub at gunbarrel. for at least a minute he had that "where the hell am i?" look on his face.
these gnarl crashes can happen at low speed on a neighborhood stroll. scary.

i feel your pain man. i have a grade 4 ac separation from 1996. i had no insurance so no surgery. but weights got me back to full strengh and mobility. dude if you get surgery go to a specialist. your average orthopedic surgeon may leave you with no range of motion .i have seen what happens with old surgery techniques. guys who cant raise their arm over their shoulder. ask a lot of q's to your doc. a sports medicine specialist is the way to go.

    mos. def.

tore my acl a while back and had full range in 3/4 the usual time...then again, I did more than the required rehab, I am 22, and my surgeon is one of the best around.

don't blow off the rehab before and after surgery. it'll seem silly and useless, but it really does make a huge difference. besides, one of the chicks working at the place I went was pretty hot.

so you owe your speedy recovery to some hot girls booty? you would not be the first guy to have that kind of dedication. the hooters restaurant chain survives on that same principle (or so ive heard!!!)

Thanks guys! The dude I went to is the shoulder guy for the U.S. snowboard and ski team and knows my desire to get back after it as soon as possible. Good think I kept paying for that catastrophic health insurance. Yeah and I know the value of good rehab. I dislocated the same shoulder snowboarding in November and had to go through it already. Was actually quite surprised I did this instead of dislocating it this time.

haha...just extra incentive. I knew it was the end of contact sports for me (played rugby, football and lacrosse in college trying to find my calling) rugby was what did me in. Either way, I knew I needed to work as hard as I could if I expected to keep on biking and whatnot into the ages. The boobies undoubtably woke me up in the mornings though.
