Which not so XC shoe? SPD/flat compatible

I'm getting tired of my XC clipless shoes. In short, they hurt during long rides, they don't offer much protection to trail debris, and they look like, well XC shoes. I also want a shoe I can use with flats as well. I'm trying to decide between the Shimano AM-45 and 5.10 Maltese, but am open to other suggestions as well. Opinions please

five ten cyclones or hellcats can be used with flats,i assume that the minnars would as well.

I own a pair of cyclones for BMX racing and they are just a high top version of the hellcats. the offer plenty of protection and ankle supports, while at the same time being stiff. The cleat tends not to agree to much with flat pedals but just taking it out would solve that.

Other options would be tevas new clipless shoe ( i assue that it has a flat sole that could be used on occasion) and 661s filter line.
