    Modify shoes for more tread?

This is my first experience with shoes that have velcro straps on top and token treads on the bottom. My previous pair is shoes was one of those that look like a low-cut hiking boot with laces and treads on the bottom. Aside from hitting the cleat, they were pretty good for walking over rocks.

These new shoes I have (Shimano M077) have token treads, but at least the rubber is soft and 80% of the sole is still covered with rubber. I have to carefully put my foot on rocks, but at least they don't slip.

Is there a good way for me at add more treads to this shoe? I know there are other velcro-based shoes with more tread on the bottom, but they are all either $150+, or aren't comfortable for my feet.

I wore the plastic soles off a set of Sidi Dominator 5. When i took them to the local shoe repair they told me that they have no good way to repair plastic soled shoes. My Sidis now look like road shoes and are very hard to walk in. Try to ride more and walk less.
