    Helmet protection

So what's a good full face lid? Reasons?

I work at a shop that carries Giro and Bell, was wondering if the Bell balistic helmet is good or not, or if I should spring for full price somewhere else and get something different?

    mad max II

my other option is the Giro Mad Max II
    http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Helmet/product_123878.shtml

Both these helmets I get discounts on, but I don't mind paying full price for a helmet because the head protection is really worth investing some money on.

you know that you can get ep, or at least wholesale on stuff that even yourr shop doesn't carry, right? that being said, if i had money (which i don't after buying a specialist) i would go for a TLD D2 bomber.

or if that is too much, probably a 661 carbon (or other one) thing like what SMT uses.

I'd like to know how you guys are getting EP on stuff that your shops aren't carrying? Are you guys contacting the companies directly, getting an EP form faxed over and doing it that way?

To answer your original question...If there's not much chance that you're going to crash on any treacherous terrain then buy a 60 dollar crap helmet. If you ride hard or any stunts or downhill then get a real helmet. Preferrably moto...the only MB helmet I would even consider is a D2. That false sense of security thinking you're wearing legitimate headgear that causes you to try something you normally wouldn't is how you'll end up in a halo gettin your diaper changed for the rest of your life. I wear a Fox ProPilot (about 350 retail) You can get a Fox Tracer...just as good, DOT-Snell approved...(about 125 retail) at any MX shop. Don't skimp when it comes to your melon.

Sure go ahead and buy a DOT rated helmet with no venting then...go ride Whistler in August and hear your brains sizzle. Any helmet which has the appropriate cerifications for bike use passes the same standards as all the others which meet the criteria. The differences are weight, materials, appearance, graphics, fit etc. A lot of price differences are marketing perceptions.

not all DOT helmets aren't ventilated. only the cheaper ones aren't. the fox V3 has frikkin crazy venting systems and channels that all vent out the back. it shows it on their site.

i can't believe no one's mentioned this: get one that fits properly. for myself, only bells fit my head--everything else is uncomfortable, unstable, and therefore unsafe.

go around to other shops if you have to to find one that fits the best. you don't want your helmet slipping around when you're slamming your head into a big pile of rocks.

I've got a moto helmet, it's just in washington with all my pads and other stuff. I didn't expect to be without my own pad this long, that's why I ride my half lid with limited pads as all my DH gear is packed up. However, my Moto lid doesn't have ventilation, and as mentioned above, a hot day at whistler and my head was a sweat bucket. I'm trying to find a good full face that I can get a discount on, we carry bell and giro at the shop. Your 661 lid is tight, I"m not saying it sucks, just trying to make full use of my discount as the funds are low.

BTW, 7 point 7 is on it's way... the Six is up for sale, or partation

    Can't wait!

oh, well I'm due for a new lid anyhow, the other one has seen several seasons, including a dirt bike season. I want to pick up something that isn't so heavy, and that has vents. The helmet I got is a heavy duty dirt bike helmet that's heavy, no venting. And pads, well, I'm due for some better pads. It's they year for new gear.

Hey I tried ordering up the 7 point 7 but I guess they are outa stock, could you pm me on how to do that EP deal with a company that we don't carry, at this point I just need something with more travel.
