Hi, newbie looking for some MTB shoes for SPD pedals.
Not looking for the racing type variety, just casual wear cycling shoes, that are lightweight, comfortable and can be worn as normal footwear.
Seems the MTB shoes the LBS carries have very stiff soles, and wouldn't really suit walking around in them at work all day.

That's the point of MTB shoes, they are stiff so you get better leverage on the pedals. If there was such a MTB shoes (one that flexed like a normal tennis shoe) you wouldn't want it for biking because it would suck.
sixsixone and specialized make some SPD shoes that you can actually walk around in though, you might check out their web site. Specialized Rockhoppers...great shoe.

The Specialized shoes have a very stiff but round footbed with raised toes and roll when walking more like clogs. I think they may be more ergonomic and keep your tendons stretched better than many of the flatter foot bike shoes. Look for the "Sport" model for best pricing, they sometimes are on sale for $10 a pair mail order from the Specialized site.
Don't get a soft soled bike shoe unless you are using duel slalom flat pedals that are SPD compatible.
Ditto the comments on the Sidis, get a pair and it'll outlast most other shoes. Oh, and get them from UK for about 150ish, check ebay.
