Fitness...but mostly because I love bikes. Any and all bikes, but I think the mountain bike is the pinacle of the melding of technology and human power. There's just so much cool stuff going on with mountain bikes.

Well put! I have recently discovered the stress benefits myself. It's truely one of the most rewarding hobbies out there.

While in rehab for alcohol and meth addiction - I considered many possibilities for leading a healthier lifestyle:

GOLF: Too slow, too boring and expensive. Who wants to spend 40% of their time waiting their turn, requiring a near-perfect swing to even succeed at?
TENNIS: Been there done that, in High School. Great, for hooking-up with all the Tennis Bunnies(chicks). Finding decent tennis courts becomes a pain...unless you have an expensive club membership.
RUNNING: What? Kill my aging knees and jostle my already-strectched organs, only to fall under the monotonous trance of road-induced hypnosis?
GYM: The combined scent of everybody's BO is more than enough to make me hurl. I realized long ago that I no longer need weighty "guns" to attract the opposite sex. Lean abs from cardio is 3x as sexy to them now. MTB works your core like no other.
MOTORCYCLE: Spend $$$ money/gas on a Harley and get fatter? I choose to run on fat and save $$$ on gas instead.
MTB: For me - it's ALL about the bike; the technology, the parts choices, etc. I obsess about bike weight, fit, and riding techniques. I love searching for trails I have never ridden before and write detailed reviews on them, so YOU enjoy them too. I make an annual effort to test-ride every MTB ever made and review them here on MTBR, so you can make the most informed buying decision. Also, I love the endorphin rush while climbing up a 22% grade and the accompanying adrenaline, while I bomb the downhills. I love the fact drugs are no longer needed, because MTB gives me all the "high" I want...and then some, for FREE. I finally selected cycling as my "sport." It took a sober and clean person to come to that realization - but I'm sticking with my choice and will continue riding until I drop...

As seen on another site - substitute riding for running in this and it sums it up pretty well The terrible and wonderful reasons why I run long distances - The Oatmeal

    -fitness
    -fresh air
    -get out of the house
-cheaper than a lot of other hobbies
    -does not involve a tv
    -meet some cool folks
    -does not involve a laptop
    -do really like running
-I like to ride alone to let my mind wonder or just be silent-whichever I choose-either way it is mine to decide

I used to do freestyle a little bit when i was 13, 14 - 15 or so. I'm 38. I havent' been on a bike since then until about 6 months ago. I hopped on someones bike that rode it to work and instantly decided i was going to get one. It made me remember how much i used to love biking and doing the craziest **** i could possibly do on my bike. Now i'm starting to figure out the new technology and am enjoying it all over again. The hardest part is getting my legs back into the shape they used to be in back then and when i played soccer. That's the challenge currently for me. Upgrading my bike is a big plus to. I like spending money....

    Three things, I think:

    -Great sense of achievement.
-Complete detachment from everyday stress and worrying.
    -Nature experience

The exercise is just a bonus.

Because after 100,000mi on various motorcycles it got a little dull. I justify my bike purchases by figuring that by not motorcycling this season I avoided a reckless driving ticket, and so the bikes were free.

You can't get a speeding ticket in the woods!

To get AWAY from it all.

    To leave work behind.

    To leave family drama behind.

    To feel that rush.

To get away from a$@hole drivers and society.

    For the health benefits.

    To clear my head.

To get to my place of zen.

I like being alone in the woods.

    I like the adrenaline.

I like "feeling" the physics behind it all.

I like the feeling of how after a ride, I feel all previous worries have just melted away.

I like getting sweaty, dirty, and just feeling like a primitive beast in the woods.

And not to mention, it's great exercise.
