Singletrack daytrip from Nottingham UK - where to go?

Looking for some single track MTBing reachable from Nottingham.
Any suggestions where to go / where to research?
We've done a week in the Alps. Looking for something other than flat muddy tracks - single track, hills & rocky descents are ideal.
We're going within the next few weeks so I guess that may rule out many routes as we're now well into the wet & muddy winter season.

I guess you've experienced sherwood pines then

Cannock chase is worth a razz, do the dog/monkey and cruise over to stile cop for a bit of downhill.

    Otherwise Dark/White Peak.

Peak district is always worth a go, unless its really windy! How far wold you go for a daytrip?
I often travel 3 hrs to ride for the day. Cannock is good too,and some how busier.

We'll actually be starting from Hemel Hempstead collecting member of party from Nottingham... so we'll already have been on the road for 1.5hrs plus when we leave Nottingham; thus don't want to travel a huge distance from Nottingham.
What sort of terrain is the dog/monkey?
What's the approx travel time to Cannock, White & Dark peak from Nottingham?

As for dark/white peak - google it there's loads of trails and peoples favorites to go at.
I think mbr mag did a peaks special a while back which is a good start if you can get a copy.
