    Shifter help

Planning to pick up a trek precaliber 25 for my little guy with 21 speed, 3 up front 7 in the back. Unfortunately it comes with those twist shifter which I hate. Is there a set of triggers like the sram x-5 s I have my bike I could swap them out for? I'm new to this but an excellent mechanic. Any help appreciated thanks guys

From what I understand it is replaceable (just taking a look at my mom's Kirkland special Infinity bike) you pretty much need to take the whole assembly apart then replace the shifter and grip. Not sure about the pull ratios or anything but you should be able to get away with using an older Shimano Acera or Altus that does 7/8 speed and kind of wangjangling it to work (I was able to get a 9 speed Deore LX derailleur working with my 8 speed beater bike even though the pull ratios were supposedly slightly different by playing with the limit screws and such). If you have one in your town look for bicycle co-op's or university volunteer bike shops.

How does your little guy feel about the twist shifters?

I believe the following will work:

Altus SL-M310 ESLM310R7AT and ESLM310LBT, right and left shifters.
    Do the math.

The Precaliber uses a SRAM rear derailleur with 1:1 actuation ratio, so you will need SRAM X3 shifters unless you want to replace the rear mech with Shimano or try to hack it somehow.

For what it's worth, my little guys seem to be OK with the twist shifters, although I have been thinking of going trigger.

The front rings give them the most trouble, and they would be a problem with triggers, too.
