    Newbie needs advice on drivetrain

    Hello MTBR,

Just joined the forum after spending many hours reading posts.

    I need some advice.

Recently purchased a Diamondback Lux for the wife for a great deal $$ off of Amazon.
Now I would like to upgrade some of the components.

Its a 7 speed hard tail.

    Shimano EF51 7 speed shifters
    Shimano Altus rear derraileur
    Shimano Tourney TX50 front derailleur
    HG20 cassette
Suntour XCT front fork with soft spring

My aim is to change out derrailleurs depending on your advice.
Then the fork if she doesnt like it, its very heavy!.
We ride mainly road (about 30miles a week) but do go advanced single track now and again at the weekend. Hard packed small rocks and tree roots no jumps. She is excited about the new bike but I am a little leary about the components.

Kinda thinking of sticking with the 7 speed cassette.
    She is 125lbs and athletic.

Any suggestions for the drivetrain and fork ?
I have seen XCR forks for $100 new on ebay but have no experience of new stuff. My budget is $200 to $250. Bought my last bike 10 yrs ago.

there is really no reason to change any parts until they break ... and I would look at Manitou or RockShox forks over the Suntour forks
I used to ride to Win ... Now I ride to Grin

While my guitar gently weeps, my bike sits there mocking me

you should have bought her a $600 bike, instead of spending about the same, after upgrading

    can you return it?

Do not upgrade a thing. Ride as is. If in the future, your economic situation allows a new bike, drop some coin on a new bike. Any performance gain that you will get by spending $250 will be marginal at best. Put that $250 into savings toward new bikes. Of course, fix parts as they break, but do not try to upgrade.
