Intense Spider AL vs YT AL Jeffsy

A buddy of mine is upgrading from an entry level Cannondale HT to his first FS bike. He is looking at the Spiderr AL foindation build. I mentioned the YT Jeffsy. Bikes are with in 200.00 of each other. YT gives him the 29 option

I figured the Spider would be better uphill and the Jeffsy better downhill. If it was me Id go the Jeffsy route. 140/140mm vs 140/130. And I prefer 29. Also figured Spider would be more poppy and the Jeffsy more plow. He is 511 215.lbs. New rider. We live and ride in Phnx AZ. Riding would be dessert XC. Sedona and Flagstaff type riding

    Thoughts?

I demoed the Jeffsy 29, albeit the carbon version. Overall, I thought it was a very well rounded bike. I think the mid travel 29 bikes hit the sweet spot of do-everything trail bikes. I thought the Jeffsy was surprisingly playful too. It's not as dull, plowy bike as you might think. Climbing wise, I really liked it. Felt faster than my Giant Trance.

I never demoed a Spider, but I have been on a Santa Cruz 5010, which is very similar. Expect a very playful bike. Given the opportunity for a new bike, I'd side 29 over 27.5 right now.

My boy rides a Trance so that gives me some idea of how well the Jeffsy climbs.

I have a Spider and briefly threw a leg over an AL Jeffsy 29. Like them both. The Jeffsy was actually smaller feeling than other mid travel 29ers I've ridden if that helps at all. Just depends on how you like to ride really. I have a 29er and the Spider at 27.5 and they are both fun and I wouldn't say one is night and day better than the other (all things considered). That said, I think if I had to limit myself to one bike, I'd probably go the 29er route. Especially with a bike like the Jeffsy.

That was my thought. Unless your a shredder. I think the 29 is the best do all route. Esp the fact that our local trails are more XC.

Again, it depends what you like to do. Most of the local stuff I ride is XC. The Spider is a great bike for getting the most out of those trails as it encourages you to seek out every feature you can to pop off of. Of course you can still do that stuff on the Jeffsy, it will probably just be a less lively feeling in doing so. All fun though!
